X5m?
I haven't owned, but the X5d was the contender against my CD.
BMW interiors are stark to the point of sensory depravation (though the 958 is extreme in the opposite end).
Comparing the same suspension (steel in my case) the 958 was less rough (that's at least partially the fault of the stupid RFTs that BMW insists on using). There was also no question which handled and responded better.
Steptronic vs Tiptronic, I think Porsche has done a better job. I don't recall if the X5M used their Step or DCT system so I don't know if that is applicable.
To me the X5 just looks old and tired while the 958s still look up to date.
Now that said, had the CD not come over at just the right time, I'd be driving the X5d now and I think I'd be happy with it (though I wouldn't love it like the CD).
We also have a 07 328 and have been happy with it's reliability, how it's held up, and BMW in general. The same can also be said of our 01 996 that we've had since new too. The experience with both is why I looked at both brands for my SUV replacement.
I know it's not exactly what you are looking for, but hope it helps some.

I have the X5M and Cayenne turbo at the same time for a little over 13 months. My take, in short is X5M drives more sport car like and feel very similar to the regular V8 version (owned the V8 and diesel before the M), until you push the car; but you really really have to punch it to feel the "M". It take some muscle to get full feel of the car, much like a raw sport car. On the other spectrum, Cayenne with PDDC is so comfortable but when you look down, you realized the car is going triple digits. The proformance is so effortless and easy by the car... not by the driver.
Can't go wrong either one, though the Cayenne turbo cost more, but both worth every penny. Wife and I just ended up driving the Cayenne more, and only put on 4k miles on the X5M when I sold it.

I've been looking at slightly used X5M and CTTs and the price difference is certainly significant, so I wanted know how much 'better' the Cayenne actually is. The interior of the 958 is one of the my favorite things about the car (I absolutely love the interior of my GTS), and I was worried I would miss it with the X5. I also like the exterior of the 958 over the X5, but I still think the X5 is a good-looking vehicle. You guys are pretty much confirming my opinions about both.
I've had both and echo what the others have said. The M was more raw.... louder and it required more to get the performance out of it but its there. Head to head CTT is a little faster but when you factor in price, X5M better value. Interior of X is not an nice but keep in mind it's from 2007.
In my 2 years and 20K+ miles only needed to replace batterty (warranty) and an iPod cable. Very reliable, both others have had problems. My CTT has had a few issues but nothing major, just annoying.
CTT - more refined. Less expensive. Needs PDCC
X5M - more raw, older design, Expensive. Come with PDCC equivalent.

X5M 0-100km/h. 4.5S, CTT 4.7S
1/4 mile X5M 12.5/112mp, CTT 12.6/112mp
This might not matter to most of you here but I drive my SUV's 110 miles daily, 6 days a week and the bigger full tank on the Cayenne TT( 2 more gallons) and better overall fuel economy (17mpg vs 15 X5M) is just so much more convenient.
In city driving, I felt the transmission is much better in the Cayenne too.

My understanding is that while the X5M is impressive, the CTT will still eat it's lunch when you start throwing it around corners.
I've got a CTT - with the electronic goodies, it really is an unbelievable all-rounder. Fast and fun - really incredible in the corners (physics defying) and plenty of room. Also pretty comfortable (it's not a Mercedes s class).
A guy with a loaded '11 X5M with Dinan suspension, exhaust, wheels, and all options (MSRP was $99k) offered me his X5 plus $20k for my Cayenne GTS. His X5M has heated rear seats and ventilated fronts (plus massage), which are options my Cayenne doesn't have. I'm seriously thinking about it.
Exactly what the video showed. It was at a track and the CTT was quicker around the track by more than a second or two; possibly more.. Can't quite locate video now.

Michael - MSRP on my GTS was also $99k. Options are shown in the pic below. I don't have PDCC or PTV. I love my Cayenne, but you're right….this deal is almost too good to pass up. I'll decide by the weekend.
