Diesel additive

OK, stupid question time. I picked up an additive some time ago, but finally picked up a funnel with a long enough neck a few weeks ago. I went to use it last night when I filled up, but the funnel wouldn't go down the filler neck. There seems to be some locking flap about an inch down that I couldn't get to move. I'm guessing it's something to prevent silly people from putting gas in, but I'm stumped.

So for you guys that have used the additives, how did you get it in the tank?

I used a short funnel. It didn't go in very far but the only trouble I had getting it on was that the funnel wasn't out far enough to pour without spilling without going VERY slowly and bending the bottom of the funnel. In other words, the short spout was preventing the funnel from being horizontal enough to hold the liquid.

Had no issues with it actually going in the tank.

Yeah I had a shorter funnel that I was originally going to use but didn't try as I didn't want to deal with a mess. Likewise I didn't try going ahead and pouring anything in with this funnel to avoid a mess.

abatis is infamous around these parts
The small Power Service bottle fit perfect for me to dump directly into the filler with no spill. I just refill the small bottles from a larger bottle of Power Service. I bought the VW fill adapter but have yet to use it.

I picked up the VAG adapter and used that in my last fill up. Not sure I really notice any difference, but we'll see in another 500 miles or so.

why not use your larger funnel to feed the smaller one?

The issue with the funnels was that I couldn't figure out how to manually open the safety gate (e.g. couldn't find the catch). Since the adapter is the same size as the correct nozzle, it opens the gate and the it's mouth was a fine size to act as the funnel.

guess I need to order one of those. gonna start doing that myself instead of having the vw dealership do it with the oil changes.

one question, how do you know when its full without overflowing it?

I didn't use it to fill it up, just to dump the additive in, but there is a warning on it that says it disables the auto shutoff so you shouldn't try to fill it all the way up.

One would only need the adaptor for refueling at a pump that doesn't have the newer size diesel nozzle, like when I was on my first long trip with the CD. I found out later it was a bonus to use it as a funnel for the additive.

You are referring to the AdBlue exhaust additive and not the diesel fuel additive.

You can get one of these bottles at a VW dealer too.

Amazon.com: AD BLUE Diesel Emissions Fluid for SCR Code TWO 1/2 gallons (2010-2013): Automotive Amazon.com: AD BLUE Diesel Emissions Fluid for SCR Code TWO 1/2 gallons (2010-2013): Automotive

It has a special leak-proof locking tip that screws into the adblue tank in the spare tire well. As for overflowing, you have to short fill. Some truck stops have an adblue pump that would have the shutoff.

It can be reused as a funnel by just cutting off the bottom or it can be refilled by cutting off the locking tabs on the cap.

You don't even need to do that. The top will twist off and then you can fill it from a bigger jug. I picked up 2 2.5 gallon jugs (BlueDEF I think?) for $30 and they had nozzles that fit into the filler spout. I dumped a full one in, refilled my small bottle from the second, dumped the remainder in, and then topped it off from the small bottle. I still have the small bottle and whats left as my emergency standby.

I went with the "don't refill it until it complains" method though and I think I got about 12.5k out of the factory fill if I remember correctly.
