Dash Cams

Anyone use dash cams? I've read a couple articles on people intentionally backing up into front bumpers and having their friends come forth as "witnesses" to back up their fraud. With cases such as these and regular accidents, and the price dash cams are going for these days, I think it is a good investment to consider.

With the abundance of 12v sockets in our cayennes, power placement should theoretically be easier. What are your thoughts? Or if you have pictures of a dash cam in your cayenne, a picture or two would be appreciated

I have one, installed it behind the rear view mirror so it doesn't get in my way while driving. Then run the cable in between the front windshield and headliner all the way through A pillar to front passenger footwell's 12V socket. All done within one hour.

I have a Panorama G mounted behind the rear view mirror as well. It has hardly noticeable from the driver position.

I'd suggest heading over to Dashcam Talk and check out some of the reviews.

Thanks for the picture Hoiya,
Yes I've browsing through the dashcamtalk forum for a while, just wanted to see how they would look/fit in our cayennes. Your dashcam is hardwired? I was thinking about routing the cable to the glove box 12v socket

It's actually not hard wired at the moment. I'm testing it out to see if I like it. I've just tucked the wire along the headliner and down the A pillar to the 12V socket in the passenger side footwell.

My Dashcam came today and I put the wiring in to the 12v at the passenger foot well. The cable of real easy to tuck away all the way down. Really can't see it anywhere.

Here is the problem. The 12v outlets are always hot (from what I can tell). I noticed while I was hiding the power cord that when I plugged it in it was not hot. I assumed this was because the door was open so long.

Maybe I'm missing something. Was hoping the outlets would go cold after a few minutes with the doors locked.

I really don't want to have to power it on and off. I like just getting in and having it start up. Is it hard to wire to another location that will turn off? I have a 2014 Diesel.

Thank you for the help. I'll do some searches too.

I recall reading somewhere they stay hot for like 30 minutes after the car is locked.

For those that care. It seems to be about Ten minutes before they turn off. I can live with that. My cam will record the inside the garage, not biggy.

I'll post pics of the installation.

I think that is a actually a great feature, especially if you get the capacitor based dash cams as it will record for a little bit after you turn off the car and confront the person who, say, backed into you.

Also, if your dash cam has a looping feature that overwrites old footage, that extra 10-15 mins of garage footage won't really matter.

It turns out if there is a source pulling load the power outlets to NOT turn off. This is a big disappointment because I really want to just drive and forget and not have to turn it on and off.

I did take some video and the installation is great, cable hidden, and camera tiny. The only thing is with a very clear sky (no haze) and the low sun there is a lot of reflection off the front dash. If you go to about 1.38 in my video you'll see it is really clear:

Odd. My Dashcam seems to be off when I check on it when the car has been parked for a while. Wonder if it turns off by itself after a while. Which dashcam do you have?

I got the TiesFong A118 (https://dashcamtalk.com/b40-a118/). Maybe you have GPS and it senses no movement for an extended period. Strange for me. How long does it take for yours to turn off? I have mine plugged into the passenger side outlet in the left side of the foot well.
