Clock Problem
Lol so your clock is just for show now.
I'm not sure how entirely accurate this is... but from what I could make out the problem was mostly on clocks with the traditional clock layout (12 at the top). If you do not want to deal with the second hand falling off, I would ask the dealer to replace it with the timer clock layout (60 at the top). That's what I have and I have not had an issue with it. It has a digital clock and small analog clock in the middle.
I said the clocks aren't serviceable due to a sealed case. WRONG. The bezel on them simply unscrews with the protective plastic-glass. You need to remove the clock from the plastic panel it's fitted into, but once you do - piece of cake. You can reinstall the second hand, and I'd suggest a TINY dab of model cement on the end of the shaft it fits on before putting it on. I'm sure that's all the "re-engineering" the clock manufacturer did.
And BOTH clocks are prone to this. I know since I have a sample of each facing me on my desk. And both got to me due to second hands falling off.
My next project is adding a clock to my '11 turbo that came without one. Unfortunately - as is typical with German cars - if the option didn't come with the car - then the wiring isn't there to support it. SO - I've got to make up a harness to connect the clock.
The one I bought off Ebay came with a short section of harness with the clock connector on it - a big plus to success in this project. The clock (or compass or sport-chrono-stopwatch) all use the same wiring.
One wire goes to a constant voltage source in the fusebox, one wire goes to ground, and two wires go to the "MMI" line of the CAN bus. I'm guessing MMI stands for MulitMedia-Interface - since that branch connects the instrument cluster, the PCM, the radio, the HVAC control unit AND the clock/compass/whatever connection. This bus has orange/brown (low) and orange/violet (high) twisted pair wiring.
There is a company on Ebay who has several ads advertising for installation kits for an outrageous price ($700-900) with a "magic" cable. I asked them how much for the cable since it would save me the time of making it - they said $250. That's silly money for what should be a $25 cable ($50 at the outside since it's going on a Porsche.)
Here are the wiring diagrams (saving you $250 perhaps..):
Enjoy!
