Help with possible 05 CTT purchase

Hey guy! First time posting in this section. I currently own a 2006 C2S and looking to buy an 05 CTT. The follwing is the description posted by the seller:

"All power options, Park assist, MooBridge Bluetooth/ipod hook up. 22 inch wheels with new rubber, 20 inch winter wheels also with all new TPMS sensors. Fabspeed rear muffler, Secondary Catalytic converter bypass. Coolant tube update, new bearings, control arms, alternator, starter, battery, spark plugs, ignition coils, EVOM air intake system all in the last two years I owned it. Selling to get a new one. It had been repainted (vandalized), and my wife backed into a poll also. Black leather interior, GPS, heated seats, height adjustable air suspension, electric brake hook up. This is the ultimate vehicle."

The mileage is 140K, all panels are original.

What are these engines good for mileage wise with proper maintenance? Will the Turbo's need to be serviced because of the higher mileage?

No idea of the full options list but this is the VIN: WP1AC29P35LA90580

Asking price is $20K

Thanks in advance,
J

Get an aftermarket warranty. There is a reason they're values have tanked so much. I'd never want to own a CTT out of warranty, let alone with 140k miles.

I use to own a very similar car (minus FabSpeed / EVOM) and while it was an amazing SUV, I ended up getting rid of it just before the warrant ran out as I had heard stories of them needing costly repairs. As a 2005 was still in the "early" days for this engine.

The only *major* issues I ran into were:

- Air Suspension air pump went out
- Oil in one of the turbos (don't remember exactly the cause of this, something w/ the coils)

Both were covered under warranty. So i'd second the comment of DBV, look into an aftermarket warrant, or set aside some cash for $$$ repairs in the future.

There are times where I still miss the car though, was a blast to drive

If the Cayenne hasn't been abused, the turbo's should be fine. I would be more worried about it having proper boost then a turbo failure. Loosing boost for these cars can come as a simple problem as a loose hose.

The Cayenne Turbo engines are very solid. I don't think I've ever seen an engine failure on a Turbo. That said, I never worked on one with 140k miles. The only expensive failures I've seen that haven't been addressed on this one are the valve body and torque converter seal.
I would be concerned about the paint work. It's rare to see good paint work these days. Also make sure the title is clear.
140k miles is a gamble, since there aren't many Cayennes in that territory to get a good sample of what goes wrong on them. A few more bucks might get you one that's a safer bet.

Thanks for the input guys! It did drive very nicely with no rattles and felt very tight. I will look into an aftermarket warranty...any suggestions?

With more than 125,000 on mine and driving her hard in various conditions, these cars do require a lot of maintenance but I am not giving mine up. I am hoping to get 375,000 more miles out of this one.

These are 500,000 mile engines providing you keep up good maintenance. Go with Motul 5-40w oil though. It really quiets down these turbos and allows them to run cooler.

EVOMS tuned mine and this one appears to have the mods but not the tune. With the 540 tune I am seeing more than 18 mpg city and 21 mpg highway and 12 mpg towing.

I don't care for the wheels on this one you are considering and wonder why the new bearings? However, there is no mention of several of the common problems: Cardan shaft (requires replacing every 60-80,000 miles), throttle body on the transmission (one time repair), horns (which will go bad again as the design allows water to get inside them).

The VIN decoder is not helping me much. I find the backup camera very useful but don't know that yours has it. That insulated glass is a desirable option. It appears to have a towing hitch which is good.

I wonder when the last brake job was done including brake fluid flush and if they used OEM parts?

With this many miles, I would be looking at "restoring" its power. By now the plastic diverter valves are worn and she probably won't hold 0.8 bar boost @ 100% if she can even hit that but she won't hold it for any length of time. I'd recommend new diverter valves and EVOMS software (like I have) and I guarantee she'll drive entirely differently--much better and better mpg. 577 hp and 587 tq :-)

Price is low and seems fair BUT have a PPI before you buy and get all the papers you can on the work & maintenance for your inspecting mechanic. Brakes can run $1800 but they are worth it. Budget in $2,000 or so for your tune up and you're into one of the best rides on the planet cheap. I prefer the 20" Michellin Diamaris if you afford them.

$1,700 part replaced but I paid for a trnasmission filter and got a free tranny flush.

The EXPLOSIVE upshifts when it goes bad can not be mistaken. You think your car is going to explode. Runs great now.

I got my 05 TT for 28.6k with 67.8k miles 6 months ago. Coolant pipes busted 2 months later not covered under my warranty and then 2 months after that my water pump went out which was under warranty, thank god. Other than that it is a great ride and I love it and plan to get it to 600 hp by mid 2013. If the car has 140k miles and you can get a decent mechanical breakdown warranty on it that covers enough of the vitals then get it! I paid 3k for a 3yr warranty with mercury insurance and they are awesome! But after the 3 years is up im getting an 08-10 model cayenne in 2016. Good luck and enjoy the ride if you get it you wont be sorry as long as you have good coverage.
