Can anyone identify this noise?

Hi Fellas,
I need help to identify this whistling noise where it is coming from. I'm assuming it might be the water pump pulley or the tension pulley. I changed the water pump about 3 years ago after the leak. Anyone experienced this with your CTT? Also the CEL come on. The sound comes on about 5 minutes after the engine is running. Is this a DIY fix? Any suggestions is appreciated. Thank you.

Mine is making a noise as well but it sounds quite a bit different than yours. I'm almost positive mine is the power steering pump that I haven't gotten around to changing.

When you did the water pump did you replace any of the belt tensioner parts? Yours sounds a lot like a bearing to me but it's hard to tell. The way these cars are set up noise seems to be very hard to pinpoint for me.

EDIT: Are you able to pull the CEL code? Since it threw a code it makes me wonder if it couldn't be something with the secondary air injection system. But I'm not sure how that system functions though.

I replaced my water pump 3 years ago. My mechanic at that time said the belt tensioner was ok. So we didn't replace any tensioner parts. I will diagnose it this weekend. I am hoping its just the idler pulley or the belt tensioner. No anti-freeze leak. The CEL didn't come one when the noise was subtle. Now that the noise is aggressive as you can hear from the video the CEL comes on. Now it's always lit up when the engine is on.

Do you have a code reader to find the code? Not sure how the idler or tensioner would trigger a code? Listening to the video again it sure sounds like the noise is louder back by the driver's side air pump area.

Doing some other reading it seems some of the pumps failed due to the filter media disintegrating and ruining the impellers of the pump and then the EGR valve.

You have a mechanic's stethoscope? Try holding it or at least a screwdriver on the air pump and see if you can pinpoint the noise.

I don't have a code reader. You are right. It's' louder by the driver's side. Will be getting the stethoscope tomorrow. I will tried the screwdriver method tonight. Thanks. Will keep you all posted. I hope its not the water pump. Thanks for the reply.

This weekend and got the chance to go under. Here is a video where the noise is really coming from.

Pulleys are ok. Looks like the noise are noticeable in the area of the secondary oil plug. Close to the trans. I also took the car to the dealer and they scan the code from CEL. The code came up with vacuum leak error. So I'm still dead i the water where this sound is generating from.

Vacuum leaks can be a pain to track down. I'm still chasing one somewhere in the turbo circuit.

You say it doesn't start until 5 minutes after startup though? Maybe part of the EGR system would be my first guess.

Actually when the engine started to get warm and hot the whistling noise slowly starts and get louder. When the engine stop after its been idle for 20 to 30 minutes you can hear a long whistle like and shuts off. I will check the EGR. Thanks for that advice.

Hi Luccia,

Thank you so much! I do have one question. What is the part number for the diaphram? I made some calls and used the part numbers listed from Pelican DIY and its not correct. I went to the deal and gave them the numbers and it does not registered. They said that diaphram comes only with the whole Valve cover!. Yikes! Do Pelican have the diaphram only? Many thanks.
