How to remove old wax residue on plastic/rubber ?

All,

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I was unable to find anything through the search engine.
Got some (old) wax residue on the rubber strips that run over the top of my hardtop. Must have been there for years (previous owner). Any idea whether i can still remove this, or are these lasting stains ?

Thanks for all your help.

The best product so far that I've used is einszett Plastic Cleaner and a microfiber towel. You simply spray some cleaner on the towel and work it into the rubber or wherever you need to clean. A toothpick also comes in handy in getting into tight places.

My favorite process too. While P21sTAW will help clean the area it will not impart any level of protection to that plasticized rubber. 1z Plastic is a far better product, cheaper in both bulk and retail size.

Griot's has a product that comes in a shoe dye type of container with a little sponge at the end. It works.
I just use Magic Eraser that I buy at the grocery store...it works even better.

The griots product is basically like a shoe polish. It's not removing the wax per say, rather putting a black dye on the trim. I've used it before and not sure if I'd give it a thumbs up. Doing it the right way may take a little longer, but the results are legit. My 2 cents.

I used the Griot's product on the plastic trim on the cover cowls on my boat engines. I did not see that it was black but it was a clear type of liquad and with the help of the sponge on the aplicator it lifted the wax right out. Then my wife got the idea a Magic Eracer would work so she started on the other engines plastic trim and that even worked faster.

The Griot's product I have is clear not a black type of dye.

We're thinking of two different things then. They do make a similar product for black trim that is a dye with similar bottle and delivery system.

Yeah, I with you I would not want that stuff. Next time try a soaking wet Magic Eraser on the molded pebbled look black body trim on cars that get was in those little grooves. It really works.

take care, Mike
