peices of my garage cement ceiling came crashing down!
our housesitter sent these pics to me just now. this is the garage from my home away from home in the philippines. fortunately, no one got hurt. had it been 10mins earlier it would have been catastrophic as she said her kids playing in that area! i've advised her to get an inspector to check the entire house asap.
i know there are some construction experts here and i'd like to get your opinion as to what is wrong with this structure if you can tell by looking at these pics. it's an open garage and the top of the garage is a veranda. from looking at the ceiling where pieces came off from, i'm bothered by the layered cement and was wondering if that is standard. the house is only a little over 2 yrs old. the climate there is pretty much cool and moist almost the whole year. i've heard of builders making bad cement mixes to cut cost. it looks like i may have gotten one of those.

you might have gotten some water damage from above, by looking at the edges of the seperation...tap very lightly (to much may break the concrete loose) on the other ceilings and if you hear a hollow sound you might have the same going on. Or a good bond between the roof and ceiling was not accomplished. It is humid there all the time! I have a hotel and houses on the island of Guimaras....and if I did not watch the construction closely, corners are cut. Good thing is labor is so cheap it is not expensive to fix!
that was my first instinct. perhaps the top is not getting a good seal which makes me nervous about the slab. i have very limited construction knowledge but the slab work appear good to you? we're having someone tap the other section. this is in baguio so the climate is very different than the lowlands.
