Project Garage Condo
The project looks amazing. For all us dreamers, what kinda costs were you working with on this? I know you stated that you wished to make things less expensive but what would you have cut back on?
Thanks in advance

Thanks guys.
In hindsight, there was really no way to cut back.
Some items were splurges (like the cabinets/lighting/tiled bath), but those are also the elements that make the place nice (to me).
Re cost, think

If i could get 5-6 guys all willing to chip in $25k I'd do it for sure. Get a lift and everything.
This is by far the coolest thing I have seen in a very long time. You sir are the man! Very impressive. I didnt even want to skip to the end of the post when I found it. I just wanted to take my time and see through the whole build. Absolutely amazing. I think it was money well spent.

The condo is currently home to my somewhat messy (& time consuming) Factory Five *Cobra* build. I'm very glad to have a warm, dry, very well lit place to work on it.
Thanks guys.
I'm definitely digging the place.. I've been out of town off/on for a couple weeks, so my progress has slowed a bit (again) on the Factory Five project.
I'm hoping to get my engine one of these days (before April's C&C) and figure I can get it running in a go-cart fashion by May 1. (famous last words).

Hi Chris -
I am about to finish my floor out at the AMP - and was curious as to what your experience has been after some time on the MMA floor? Would you do it again? I like the look so much better than epoxy -

After living with the MMA floor for over a year, my conclusion is that it looks awesome, it resists most light scratching very well, but is not as impact resistant as epoxy or quartz.
I believe that MMA - if deployed in the proper thickness - would probably hold up to most common AMP-type use (driving on it). If you're going to be hardcore on it, then you may want to look at quartz (or be prepared to re-coat in a couple years).
Quartz, from what I've seen on-site, has shown to be quite durable - perhaps more durable than both MMA and epoxy. I did not prefer the color/patterns/look of quartz as it not translucent at all (like epoxy).
Epoxy, IMO is fairly durable to sharp impact strikes, but (and especially if you go glossy) shows its scratching - the darker the worse it is.
Since identifying MMA's tendency to chip under sharp blows, I changed how I worked and changed some of the tools I use so that impact hits don't hurt the floor. There are a few chips in it, but unless you're looking for them, you don't notice it.
The guys who installed mine are probably the guys that Bruno would put you in contact with. We had a significant disagreement about how durable the coating turned out to be (and how thick it should have been applied), but at the end of the day, the owner agreed to re-coat at their cost/and at my convenience this summer.
So, my qualified answer to your question is yes, I would do it again because the look of the floor is so determinative for the space.
I'm confident I'll be able to avoid most issues with a fresh coat of MMA on the floor. can always put another coat down.
One thing that you may not yet know is that once you go MMA, you're basically 'stuck' with MMA due to the way that the acrylic sublimates into the concrete surface layer. In other words, the only way to do an epoxy over the top of MMA is to surface grind the MMA off beforehand. I believe it might be the same for a transition from MMA to quartz, but you might here differently.
I'll be at C&C in a couple weeks if you want to swing by for a closer look. Alternatively, PM me if you want to come out beforehand.. My office is 5 minutes from AMP.
Take it easy,
Chris
ps.. If you go with MMA, be very granular in your request (and they will retort with pricing) for the depth of the concrete 'cream' you expect them to remove. The deeper they go, the more aggregate will show (big pieces) and the more expensive the job. There are practical limits to how deep one can go - dependent partially on the mixture comprising the aggregate. The clubhouse was shaved 2 or 3 times and that level of exposure is NOT typical. Also, you can experience pitting of the acrylic if you go too deep, so be mindful of that also.

Thanks Chris -
Exactly what I needed to hear. Very helpful!
I am now pretty sold on MMA - and the architect designing my garage is extremely **** - so I'll make sure he is around, and aware, of the potential issues you outlined.
Thanks again - your space was part of the motivation for me to buy-in at the AMP

Happy to help Max.
You might want to review this .pdf (overview of various MMA floor 'systems'). I'm 99% sure we had a two coat (not enough) Cryl-A-Shield version.

Also interesting:
http://www.industrial-flooring-texas...ems-Guide.html (see 'impact resistance').
http://www.polyspec.com/Lit/M_Physic...20-%201103.pdf
The implication that an MMA floor can withstand a 2lb steel ball drop from 8ft (sic - without damage (.011") is absurd.
-Indentation Characteristics .................................0.011"
(Impact Load) MIL-D-3134, Para. 4.7.3 ..................0.28 mm
(2 lb. 908 kg) Indent from steel ball Dropped twice from 8 ft height
Just sayin'.

Thought some guys would like to see an update to the Factory Five build.
Engine arrived last week and we dropped it in on Saturday.
Alex Bellus took some awesome pics of the install 'party'. (and helped install it too)
Hi-res versions at the bottom of the page.
Enjoy.
