Garage Doors

Hello
I just have question about garage doors.

Can anyone recommend me some garage door brands?
Also if some garage doors are more expensive than others, what are the factors affecting cost? (other than fancy finish from outside)
Lastly, do you guys think home purpose garage doors can actually protect valuable cars from theft? I presume it would not be so hard to break garage doors since it is just thin metal.

Any help will be appreciated

Save the dough, go for the cheap Garaga door and let a Doberman Pinscher sleep inside your garage at night. Anything else??

hehe, i know exactly what you mean.
However I used to have a supposed to be a scary, good anti-theft dog and guess what, my dog just shake his tales and beg for cookies or attention to whomever he sees and I gave up the idea of using dog as means of protection. He was very good for being a companion doh.
Does anyone have any idea which garage doors are good? or can I just purchase anything? Any experience will be appreciated!!

Clopay is one of the best companies. Dont buy cheap, they will rot and give you problems down the road. Where do you live? Just get a double skin insulated door, keeps the garage cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Thank you Dev. I will check on clopay.

I will be redoing whole garage and it seems getting experience info regarding garage doors is not easy.

I went with Garaga. Got major insulation value. Get an alarm system for protection. There is not a lot that a determined thief can't get through if he wants to get your car. Organic Ball bearing barking divices are only as good as your neighbors.

Thank you Mussel!!
I will be checking on Garaga now.
I am planning to put alarm system for sure.
I just never questioned the safety of garage door until this time and since I am doing the whole garage, the idea of safe garage door just popped.

I just built a house with a few of these openers for a client. They are new from Liftmaster.
http://www.liftmaster.com/cw/product...id-233,00.html
They are side mount and with a low cost Clopay insulated steel door, they are extremely quiet. They also automatically lock once lowered. They are about double the price of a standard opener(@$370).

I wouldn't understate the importance of selecting a garage door to its impact upon how people view a home. Curb appeal is the first impression people have of a home and the garage door is often the largest & most visible feature.

I've never quite understand why homeowners happily shell out thousands of dollars for a beautiful entryway that they use only sparingly and then completely ignore the garage door. I rarely use my front entryway door except to greet the occassional dinner guest and trick-or-treaters that pass through during Halloween. Yet, my garage door is the main entrance to my home. We must open and close it six or eight times a day coming and going.

Anyhow, what kind of garage door are you seeking: wood, steel, aluminum ... or dare I even say this word, vinyl?

hehe vinyl...

I prefer steel or aluminium doors.

It's just too much to think about since building a new garage.
Flooring, garage doors, openers, tools, tool boxes, lift etc etc...
Too much idea and not much experience.

I'm partial to wood doors myself because they are timeless and have more character, but I also understand the value of metal doors.

Here are some of the leading metal door manufacturers:

www.amarr.com/
www.clopaydoor.com/
www.wayne-dalton.com/
www.raynor.com/
http://www.jeld-wen.com/garagedoors/

Regarding the openers, your garage door dealer will recommend the appropriate model based on your door selection and needs.

Thank you very much Chadhass.
What's funny is the more I look into it, the more confusion I get...
Well, hope I can come out with good answer.

I have Clopay doors with Liftmaster openers and have had no issues. As a builder, its all I've used for 10 years and they seem to hold up better than others. The window trims don't yellow etc.....and is a reasonable $$ value as well
