Borla exhaust development for 997 GT3

Hello all, this is Chris from Borla Performance in Oxnard, CA. www.borla.com

We just received a 997 GT3 at our facility here this morning. We’re in the beginning development stages of an exhaust system. I’d like to get some feedback from GT3 owners as to what you might be looking for in an aftermarket exhaust.

What size and style tips do you prefer?
How often do you drive in Sport Mode?
What are your thoughts about the vacuum-actuated exhaust valve?
How aggressive of an exhaust tone are you looking for?

Thanks for your interest.

I like what GMG and sSarkwerks have done with regards to making the exhaust louder and free breathing, when in sport mode, and taking some weight off the rear. With that said if you can lighten the "entire" exhaust system by reducing the weight of the two large side Primary mufflers (which are rarely used by some of us, I always press sport), I think that would be worth considering.

I like the larger dark tips.

I do like the idea of having the valves to run the exhaust a little quieter for certain situations.

Did I mention lighter?....

Thanks for asking us.

What is Borla ready to develop for the GT3/RS. I personally feel the "sport button" is BS. It is always on, I would think we always want our cars to sound powerful. There is no reason ever not to have it on.
The aftermarket tuners who develop the center muffler delete system produces better sound but there is no hp gain. To me, to pay thousands of dollars for just sound is BS. I want true hp gain as I have experienced with the FVD header and race exhaust system.
I am willing to grant the benefit of the dought for development which is possible by the tuners, inthis case Borla.
I want a system that develops power and sounds better than stock.

Although I don't own a GT3, I have used several Borla Exhausts on my cars. The best sounding I have to say was on my '05 STI...it made that car sound like a small block. While power and great sound are almost obvious, I would have to guess perfect fit and the great looking Borla tips are up there on the list also.

ive had 7gt3 for 6 months and 5k miles. exhaust is only thing thats needs improving. not nearly aggressive enough for this type of car. needs to approximate ferrari noises esp the scream at high rpm.

the valves are horrible. would be ok if it was just a simple loud/quiet button but it keeps changing sound with rpm's. one sound at idle, another at low rpm, 3rd at high rpm. almost seems like artificial recording played through stereo. ive disconnected the valves and its ok with some booming around 3000rpm but at least sounds natural.

i would want some change in look also. maybe similar to lambo's 2 center pipes where they slant upwards past the bumper maybe with an angle to the cut of the outlets too. offer different finishes - black, brushed, chrome.

last of all but maybe most important is price. imo, not too many p ownerswill spend thousands compared to ferrari/tubi who will.

Stock size is a minimum, but I would think a tad larger/aggressive would be more appropriate. I like the option of having a black chrome, but I think some would like a polished look. (Being that my car is triple black, I would want a black chrome tip)

How often do you drive in Sport Mode?
Always. Next question... ;-)

What are your thoughts about the vacuum-actuated exhaust valve?
I would prefer it without the valves. I see the valves as a way around the noise restriction in Europe. I would not be against the idea of a quiet/loud button. I DO NOT like how you can choose sport but still get the on/off switch-like sound from the exhaust since the valves close until you get to a certain speed.

How aggressive of an exhaust tone are you looking for?
It's a GT3...it should sound like one.

My 2 cents...

If you can make an exhaust that sounds like Kreisieg's 996GT3 exhaust I will buy. Right now.
Also as far as tips the RSR's look amazing.

How about a Borla system for the 996 GT3? That's what I'd really like.

With regards to developing a system for the 996 GT3, there's no need, b/c we’ve already got one! RR4, the sound is aggressive, but not overbearing. Chris - you just made my day. I am on my third Borla exhaust system (on my other cars) and I have never regretted the money spent on any of your systems. The reason? Its because you can live with them, day in and day out. Never harsh, but always conveying a sense of greater power than the stock exhaust systems.

For the GT3? Please make it louder than the stock system, but not too loud. There are several bypass type systems already out for those who need to sound like a race car every time they drive down the street. It would be nice to have a quiet / loud option, actuated by the sport button. The present "sport" setup really doesn't do a whole lot except to add a drone at idle speed. So I do not use the sport setting around town. When I'm on the track, I do use the sport button, but I also disconnect the electrical connection to the exhaust under the hood.

Anyway, thats my opinion. I am looking forward to buying yet another Borla system.
