i-Pod Integration
i-Pod Integration
Any of you guys integrate i-pods in your 997 GT3's.
I don't believe the GT3 uses the MOST system so it should be easier than other Porsche's.
Is there a good solution?

GT3 has a MOST bus just like all other 996 & 997s. You can see the optic fibers routed behind the brake assy in the front trunk, have to remove the 6 or 7 screws that hold the large housing piece.
Had a Dension Gateway 500 in my 996TT, I am about to install it in the GT3, works very well. There is a very informative thread here.

+1! It's the best aftermarket iPod install you can do in a car with a factory nav/screen. Period.
No they are now competitors per my understanding and I believe that the products are different. Tech support can be a bigger issue than the performance of the products themselves, and neither have direct operations in north america. So you're left with two small outfits who try to keep their customers happy.
On my TT, I had headaches because my car happened to have 'unusual' Yazaki fiber optics whereas most 996 and all (?) 997 have Tyco connectors.
Here is the GW500.
Here is the DICE.
DICE apparently does not support cars w/o PCM so if you only have the CDR24 like me, the GW500 seems to be the only path forward.

Thanks, both seem pretty similar.

What did you use to actually attach the i-pod to the car and is this a job for someone who's fairly handy but not an electrician?
Very clean install, I was thinking I wanted the i-Pod in the glove box or center console but after looking at your pictures there really isn't any reason to do that.

After having a good look at the Porsche solution and also those from Dension and NavTV, I decided to order the iPod interface from mObridge.
I ordered direct from www.mobridgeinc.com. Took about 4 days to arrive with me in the UK. Had to pay 4% import duty and VAT upon arrival. Total cost circa $750.
Inside the box was the control unit + all the various cables and connectors required and even cable ties. Documentation had been emailed to me earlier to forward on to my installer.
I decided to have both the control unit and my iPod installed in the front boot. The control unit goes where a CD autochanger normally would. My iPod is velcro'd in place in a small pouch in front of it. The CD autochanger is not available from the factory on my car but it is prewired for one. This makes the install very quick, easy and totally non invasive. You can also choose to have the iPod fitted in the glove compartment or in the centre console. The control unit can be installed behind the dashboard if you prefer. The installer documentation is very thorough with lots of pictures.
So does it actually work then? In a word, yes. You have complete control of the iPod from the PCM screen. The PCM "thinks" it's controlling a CD changer. The mobridge control unit translates PCM commands into iPod ones. Discs 1 to 6 translate into playlists, artists, albums etc... So you select say disc 3 which brings up a list of all albums on your iPod. You then browse through the list and select what you want to listen to. Once you've selected an album title the tracklisting in then displayed. You can browse the tracks, play them in normal order, random, repeat etc... Mobridge supports unlimited tracks, displayed in pages of 99 at a time. The response speed is good. On my 5th generation iPod with 20Gb's of music, listings are sub 2 seconds. Integration with sat nav is as you would hope...eg it mutes the music as directions are spoken. I don't have the phone module in my car but from my understanding the integration would be equally good.
Two small negatives I've spotted so far... there is no disc assigned to Podcasts and the method of navigating folders is slightly counter intuitive. On this second point it's Porsche's fault really - I guess they didn't design PCM controls with iPod front of mind.
The sound quality is excellent. The unit disables equalisation settings on the iPod in favour of your cars own settings.
Overall I am really pleased so far. mObridge does exactly what it claims.
