Considering swapping my 996TT for a 997GT3RS...
wondering, what anyone's opinion is that has either driven/owned/or compared them both.
I recognize that the GT3 is more of a track car with street pads and such on it...and my quattro qualifies as the same (cage, super stiff and low, etc.), so i dont know if its overkill or if im not going to want to drive either of them on the street much due to it being painful to be in for more than an hour or two. But the 997RS is just sick looking and if its not even a comparison as to how outstanding the GT3 is, I may have to consider trading for one.
I assume the value wouldnt drop quite the same on the GT3 as it has on the 996TT as well?
Also/lastly - it seems like most of the prices i have seen for them are in the 180+ range...i thought they stickered quite a bit lower than that...are they that rare that they command well above sticker? or whats the story?
thanks in advance for your opinion/2 cents.

I had a 996TT, and currently have a 997 GT3 (not an RS, but I'll give you my opinion). My GT3 is not used daily. That said, I like the GT3 much more than the TT. Except for the Turbo's potent mid-range thrust, the GT3 is better/more enjoyable in every way - and it sounds way better.
The way it keeps pulling as the revs climb really gets your heart racing (even under part-throttle acceleration). I really thought I was going to miss the Turbo's torque, but I rarely do. The GT3 is fast. It's every bit of 415 hp.
Driving the GT3, you feel like you're operating a mechanical thing, a quality missing from most of today's sports cars, which feel numb/disconnected by comparison.
It's a capable driver, but daily use could become wearing. The GT3 is low, firm and has heavy controls. The TT is not as low, has lighter weight controls (clutch, shifter, steering) and is less stiffly sprung. I use the GT3 two to three times a week and it's fine.
Even though the new Turbo is faster than my old TT, it's a similar experience. I would not want one in place of my GT3. I'm sure a highly modified Turbo has got real character, but I'm not spending major $$ on mods to infuse the car with some soul.
IMO, if you want a special car to get that 'tingly feeling' in, and you want a Porsche, you really need a GT3, GT2 or CGT. As good as it is, the Turbo is a compromise vehicle.
The 997 GT3 will likely hold its value better than a Turbo, the RS even more so (as long as you don't pay too much over for it).

go for the RS. but if the used markup is too high for you, then go for the GT3. almost the same car for much less markup. i opted for the 997gt3 over the 997tt for its raw power feeling
Buy a GT3 or an RS. The RS will hold its value better but, as many have said, they are very similar, particularly if the GT3 you buy has PCCB. Buy one that already has the Euro seats if that's something you prefer. The 996TT is a good car, but has already taken a big depreciation hit -- more than a GT3 will take any time soon, I'm guessing. In my opinion (and realize we're biased people to be asking), the GT3 is the best 911 to own, if you're going to own just one current-generation 911. It's very well balanced, needs nothing (completely enjoyable stock), doesn't draw too much attention, and can be driven to the corner store. It's much more car than the 997TT (in my opinion) in terms of really feeling like a race car and the normally-aspirated engine note (mentioned earlier in this thread) is a big part of the experience -- though the 997TT is very fast, it doesn't *feel* as fast as a GT3, in my opinion, having spent a fair amount of seat time in each
But you should judge for yourself. Have you driven a GT3 yet? What were your impressions? If you haven't, drive one... but don't say I didn't warn you, you'll be hooked. If you take a test drive with a checkbook in your pocket... trouble trouble trouble.

I know a lot of people who had 996 TT and they couldn't be any happier moving to the GT3/GT3RS. Natural aspirated in this car makes you want to drive it more.

I had a 996 TTX50 and 2 997 TTs, as well as 2 996 GT3s.
Just bought a 2007 GT3 RS with 400 miles on it and there is no comparison. All of the 996 and 997 turbos that I have owned had tremendous torque with low to mid range power, but I also felt very insulated from the road.
As someone else posted here, and many car magazine folks have written (FWIW), the 997 GT3 RS is the ultimate normally aspirated 911, with a great mechanical feel, resembling racing 911s of old. The 997 GT3 will be a less expensive purchase, for almost the same car. Or you could wait for direct injection and PDK in a 2010-2011 GT3.
