Harness Question

Instead of putting my aftermarket seats in the Turbo, I'd love to be able to use a harness with the factory seats. Since I'm going to be using this car for a daily driver, the factory seats are much more convenient.

Anyways, I can use a 6-point anti-sub type system to wrap around my thighs because the factory seats don't have the pass through hole. The problem is the shoulder straps. I've seen people use a special strap to secure the shoulder straps together because the factory seats have the integrated headrests without holes for the straps. I think there's one that mounts behind the headrest and I've heard of one that mounts across the sternum.

What are your opinions?

Use the GT3 seat.

If you are going to use a harness it is pretty useless without the correct seat to;

A Hold you in place
B Restrain you correctly in the event of the unexpected.

In my youth (hell fire I am old!) I had a Mk1 Escort Mexico with a cage and a 4 point harness with the low back seats. Made a small error of judgement and ended up putting it into a farmers field. 50ft into a farmers field. Upside down.

Because I did not use a seat with the correct holes for the belts they slipped and I ended up with severe neck and back injury as I was then unrestrained. I still have neck and shoulder problems relating back to this 20 years later.

If you are using a harness use the right seat.

Here endeth teh lesson.

Mr.RS, You said it right, I also told him this in the Turbo Forum if he is going to do it, do it right or not at all, the GT3 seat is the way to go, he told me that with a stock seat the 6 point can work well, I dont believe in that one bit, just run 3 point stock if you dont do the full proper install.

JASCLASS: Why don't you go a reread that post. For the second time, I never said that. I did say that a six-point is designed to work with a seat that does not have the anti-sub hole. I was merely inquiring about the shoulder straps with stock seats. If you don't understand how a six-point works, do go saying it's the wrong thing to use.

GT3 seats are bit overpriced in my opinion. They're nice, but I prefer my FIA approved Cobra Imola II's. I guess I'll just use these.

IMO, I don't think that GT3 seats are overpriced. Compare them to the Leather Recaro Pole Position at $1495.

You're right...let me rephrase that. They're a bit expensive for me. I'd rather spend the money on other mod first. They're actually very nice seats for the money.

And I will say it again as I have 6 point harnesses in the car with GT3 seats and you are better off leaving stock 3 point because your installing harnesses the wrong way and they wont be of optimal protection for you, good luck with your decision.

Agreed, I paid $1,150 for my GT3 seat, and it has been an absolute pleasure. I only wanted one so I could keep access to the rear cabin space for luggage and cleaning.

Macfly, I really enjoyed reading your review of the GT3 for Roadfly. That is, if that was you who wrote it

So do GT3 seats sell in pairs? Is that why most places want close to $3,000?

You can easily get a pair of new GT3 seats for $2500, if you shop around for a bit. Doesn't seem overprice IMHO.

jake --

cobras are the way to go. if/when i get another gt2 - and lightweight it - rather than wasting 2300 on gt3 seats delivered, i'll get cobra suzukas for 600@.

DO NOT F.K AROUND TRYING TO USE HARNESSES ON STOCK SEATS. THIS IS HIGHLY STUPID. the critical issue is spine compression which could paralyze you to save some $ and convenience. use a removeable harness bar if you cant stand a nice teq. rollbar. get sub bars and run 6 points

I took a serious look at the Cobra Suzuka seats as well. The GT size was very comfortable for us bigger guys & the side bolsters for the legs will provide more support for longer stints. My only objection was that you could only get the alcantera fabric on the carbon fiber seats, and I wasn't going paying that much money for seats with all the other crap that you have to get to safely track the car. Plus climbing into them on a regular basis & no seat tracks for adjustability, etc.

My only problem is that I need access to the rear seats to insert baby into baby seat. I have the Cobra one piece for the driver side and a Corbeau recliner for the passenger side. I can recline the Corbeau and get him in there but it looks a little goofy with two different seats and the Corbeau is a a piece of crap.

Plus, the rails that come with most aftermarket seats are dog-doo. They restrict movement forward so much that I can barely reach the pedals (even after modifying it). Not a big deal, but then the wife can't reach the pedals. She never drives it, but in an emergency, I'd like her to be able to.
