Break-In

If there is a previous post I am sorry please direct me to it.

I want to know if it is critical to follow the Porsche break in period.

1. No revs above 4000 rpm

Any other recommendations?

my advise is don't do the sharky bypass pipes until you're past 1200mi. it'll just make it more agonizing not being able to go wot.

use your own judgement. i'm not exactly sure what the manual says but kept mine under 4krpm at <1200 mi. and under 6k at <2000 mi. just drive it around often, you'll get there in no time.

For break-in kee it tp 4K and under to 1000miles.... then after that you can start "dipping" into 6K or so but just don't hold it there. The most important thing is the _vary_ the RPMS as much as you can. Do a bunch of city-style driving. The worst thing is to sit on the freeway for hundreds of miles at one rpm.

I think you have to be reasonable about it. The first day I bought my 3 I drove it all day like the 4th of july then I came home and read the manual and said holy crap. I did a few 7,000 shifts. Having said that I know the 3 motor is put on the dyno and tested and tuned. Anyway, the break in is just as much for the transmission and other moving parts and not just the motor, if you were to sneak it up 2 or 3000 RPMs above the 4 easy and not every time I don't think you are going to hurt anything.

But just for a reference, they don't recommend you track your car in the break in but I had my car at the track the first time at 1200 miles.

Guys,

Ask any engine builder who has been doing it long enough.. Break it in like you are going to drive it.

All our race engines get broken in on the dyno and HARD....... All the way up to redline from the start..... And thats done by PMNA.

Every engine I have ever built has been broken in the same way and have never had an issue.

The 997GT3 is no different.

You want to vary the load on the engine and dont be afraid to take it up to redline.
What you dont want to do is get on the freeway and drive 100 miles at a constant RPM.
The key is to vary the load in all gears both on up shifts and downshifts.
This will also help break in the gearbox, syncros and bearings as well as set the axles.

This will also allow the rings to propely seat themselves........... Dont want that annoying puff of white smoke on start up ?? Then dont be afraid to break it in.

Just my .02 cents and my personal experiance.

PS... Our 997GT3 went to the track with 80 miles on it and the car runs like a bat out of hell........... No engine problems what so ever and no annoying smoke on start up either.........

Sell what GT3 street cars or race cars?

My point was that the cars are completely safe to be driven hard when new.
