PCM Phone Module
PCM Phone Module
so my gt3 has one of those PCM phone modules. works great and i don't have to worry about my phone battery running out or forgetting my charger on long trips as the phone is in the pcm. only problem is i have to remove my sim card from my phone and transfer to the sim card slot on the pcm in order to use it.
anyone else have this phone module option? how are you finding it? i feel it's very incovenient moving sims all the time from my phone to the pcm.
i'm thinking maybe just adding another line to my family plan from at&t. $10/mnt? resonable. but i just hate having another phone#.
how about cloning my existing sim card. is that doable? is that even legal?

I had the PCM in my TT and used a SIM card from a pay as you go phone from AT&T. My regular service provider is Sprint and they don't have SIM cards. I did not use the car phone that much so it worked for me. If I needed it regularly I would have switched to AT&T and added another number. I tried the Tooki thing and did not like it. IMO the PCM phone is a much better solution if you have it, even with the extra number.
thanks. yeah i'm not much of a bluetooth fan either. it drains the phone battery quick and transmission isn't really all that great (at least the one on my bimmer).
the pcm phone module is great. hardwire. no fuzz. i just hate the sim transfers. i'll look into the pay as you go phones. thanks for the suggestion. that might be a good option for me as this car is not a daily.

but let's take a look at your options:
1) swap your current sim to your PCM phone module every time
2) pay $10/mo and get another line from ATT (forward your current phone to this one)
3) buy a pre-pay phone and insert that sim in your your car (forward your current phone to this one, does the load expire?)
4) use some type of BT module like Tooki or Mobridge
5) drive with your iPhone to your ear

6) use a clone and remember to turn off your iPhone everytime you drive the GT3
i like options 3 and 6
#1 that's what i'm doing now. there's been a few times i left my sim in the car.
#2 i just don't like having another number but this is probably what i end up doing.
#3 same as 2
#4 not worth it in my case
#5 don't want to get a ticket!
#6 definitely, only if sure it's not breaking any laws.

yeah you're right. i can't think of any phone that's easier/quicker to remove the sim. i'll need to stash some toothpics in the car for now then.
I've found that if you clone your SIM and your phone carrier notices two SIMs being used concurrently, they'll shut down your account.
I currently have the Tooki system in mine working with the BlackBerry Curve. I'm happy with this solution but my buddy has the SIM card "pay-as-you-go" option from T-mobile. You get up to 1000 minutes for $100 and a year. If you don't use all of it, the minutes roll over to the following year once you pay $100 again. Seems to work for him.

i forgot i had a pay-as-you-go phone which i got for my wife ~6months ago as a temp replacement for her lost phone. tried that scheme for a few days.
1. still don't like having another #.
2. the phonebook/contact replication between my primary phone and secondary phone is a *****.

I have the Tooki and the iPhone, works like a charm. Bluetooth is the way to go, Option 666 maybe great in Europe (I have heard that they can get copies of there SIM for there 2nd phone), but in NA it is a PIA.
There are other options for Bluetooth with the PCM.

My boss has the PCM phone module in his 2007 Carrera 4S. It has little to no signal strength and drops calls (if you can even make them). I thought maybe I would need to register the phone's IMEI number with ATT but I've been told it doesn't have one. Has anyone else had these types of issues and if so how did you correct them. If not, can you tell me where you are and which network you use. Also any info on how you set it up would be helpful. We were told we just pop the sim card in...maybe there's more to it? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
