Best 911 for $40,000?
The CaymanS is going to keep depreciating in value and $40K Cayman will be in the 20's in a few years. Meanwhile a 996TT has taken most of the depreciation hit already.
My 997TT just passed 44K miles and its going strong, so the engines have plenty of life in them.
If you can grab a 996TT for $40K and you know the service history, car, and owner, I wouldnt think twice, its a helluva a lot of car for the price tag. And in a few years when you sell it, as long as its been maintained I can't see it fetching less than $30K.
Though if you want complete peace of mind a newer car is always better, but have him test drive a 996, CaymanS, and a 996TT and see what he prefers.
Too many variables without test drives and knowing what kind of driver he is.

Depends what Cayman you are talking about... not all Cayman's are the same
This is my old car that Alex tweaked... was a head turner and went better than most 911's (not TT)
Just my two cents... 06 and reliable. I think they are a great car and as we all know every car depreciates

An 8 year old car with no warranty and 50K miles may sound like cost savings if one looks at depreciation exclusively .. but that's not the entire cost .
I wouldn't think twice about a well maintained 996TT if you can find it for $40k. Considering the age, the mileage shouldn't be as big an issue as maintenance history and the 996TT is a very reliable vehicle when properly maintained. Until 996 GT3's dip that low, I'm voting for pre-owned Turbo.
Tell your buddy to buy Christians car and save my kidney
With $40K, he could buy my 2003 911 with <50K miles and $17,000 worth of extras (2 sets of wheels, JIC Cross coilover, bla, bla, bla,,,) and still have $5-6,000 left to spend on exotic dancers. Now that'd be fun on AND off the track

I wouldn't do that though.
My friend's 02 996 turbo is practically a money pit. Window actuator, interior falling apart, etc.
Maybe others have had better experiences.

Sweet, are those recaros?
Turbo or Cayman. Depends on what he wants to do. If he wants to track with you I'd pick up the Cayman for sure. If he wants to play around, nothing beats a TT on the street (with a chip/exhaust)
I'll Come at this from another angle.
I wouldn't get a Cayman S nor any 996 even a turbo unless further depreciation isn't an issue. I would pick up the best longhood I could find and depending on his perspective either go for originality or a hot rod interpretation.
Money applied that way is well spent and in a few years after the Cayman S and the 996TT have continued on their downward slide he can pick one of them up even cheaper knowing all the while that the value of his early has either increased or remained virtually the same.....
