W8MM is infamous around these parts
The last 4 or 5 digits of the VIN may provide some insight into the production sequence. The dash plaque number DOES NOT necessarily have anything to do with the production sequence. Some dash plaque numbers were "reserved" for customer requests and were not issued in sequence.

How on earth then is my CGT (built Sept 04) #109X if they are only building 1500 (with 2 full years of production left after mine)?

Could be with a limited production car they use the first place of the last 4 digits as a place holder (so yours is number 9X for MY '05)?

My last 2 Carreras last 3 digits were 29X and 49X, and both were in the first month or 2 of the model year, which makes sense.

Sure hope so. #9X for MY '05 still seems a little strong since I don't think they're up to much more than 2/day and the factory was closed in August. '05s didn't start til they reopened.

The bottom of this page talks about models with less than 500 produced per year:

The way I read it, the bold part of the following (from the bottom of that page) indicates that the last 3 digits is the serial number, for models with less than 500 produced per year:

(3) The third through the eighth characters of the fourth section shall represent the number sequentially assigned by the manufacturer in the production process if the manufacturer produces 500 or more vehicles of its type annually. If the manufacturer produces less than 500 motor vehicles of its type annually, the third, fourth and fifth characters of the fourth section, combined with the three characters of the first section, shall uniquely identify the manufacturer, make and type of the motor vehicle and the sixth, seventh, and eighth characters of the fourth section shall represent the number sequentially assigned by the manufacturer in the production process.

ben, lj- Did you order your CGT with 22 pages of option list or the original 5 page $0 option list? There are some nice options available now...but are very pricey.
