Making the switch from a 996TT to a GT3/997TT?

Looking to unload the 996TT here soon. I'm certainly going to miss the power, its very fast (600hp+) but i'm looking to try something different. Maybe something just as fast, or maybe something toned down a little bit.

Now that the 07 GT3s and 997TTs are in a great price range 75-85k i've been putting a lot of thought into both of them.

What are you guy's thoughts about either of those cars? I've daily driven the 996TT for a while now and it's been fine, doesn't bother me, but I would like to get something newer, and more aggressive/cleaner looking.

I've always been a fan of the GT3s - in fact that's really the main car I want right now, but I also love the 997TTs because they're very refined and easy to squeeze big hp out of them.

I travel every month or so and I've done it many times in the turbo - it actually makes the trip fun, so I'm not too worried about that with a GT3 or 997TT.

Do any of you guys daily drive your GT3 or 997TT? Have any of you gone from a 996TT to a GT3?

Thoughts, comments?

Thanks!

Really tough question to answer. I would reluctantly vote for the TT because you are daily driving. If you did track events I would suggest the 3. I'm pretty sure you won't go wrong on either one.

i had a 996tt. currently have a 997tt and a 2010 gt3. big difference between the 996tt and the 997tt. i put 70000 miles on the 996tt and have 33000 on the 997tt. nice cruisers with plenty of power available. however, imho, the gt3 wins hands down for pure driving pleasure. the experience is so much more visceral and you get the immediacy with the n/a gt1 motor, with a sound that no turbo can come close to. for canyon carving and any spirited driving, it is only the gt3. in fact, my son can barely keep up with me as he drives the 997tt. certainly the turbo would win a long straight drag race, but for any other opportunities the gt3 is far and away the most fun. therefore, if you are a straight line drag racer, buy a vette. for true road work, the gt3 will make your drive so much more exciting.

i drive the turbo now only to get to work, but i dream of every chance to get behind the wheel of the gt3. and yes, you can daily drive the gt3 with no problems.

I daily drive my 997 GT3. In fact, it's my only car. Even in stop&go traffic you won't notice the heavy clutch after a week or so.

The suspension is stiff and jarring, but within my tolerance limits. I think it's perfectly fine for enthusiasts, but I can understand why someone might disagree about ride quality. I'm judging mine based on the terrible roads here in Houston. If I still lived in Austin I'd have zero problems. I don't know how the roads are in your area, and obviously there are gigantic differences from region to region which will affect your situation.

Of all the compromises you have to make with the GT3, the biggest one is ground clearance. Even at the stock ride height I scrape the front lip on the car multiple times a day. There are parking lots I could take my '07 C2S which are not navigable by the GT3 (sometimes there's even inadequate rear clearance, meaning it's not just a matter of the front plastic lip). Again, this is highly regional, but it's a real issue. There are places you just can't drive a GT3. The availability of the hydraulic lift kit in the 2010+ cars is not just a gimmick.

Bottom line, it's do-able for enthusiasts. I do agree, though, that the GT3 is sort of a waste unless you plan to track the car. It's difficult to extract or discern the real benefits of a GT3 when driving on the street. On the track they're sublime but on the street they're just noisy, bumpy, scrapy Carreras that attract a lot of attention.

I had TWO Gt3s a 996 and 997, and its a hard car to drive day to day. I have a C2S PDK
now and its daily capability is much better. The GT3 needs to be opened up and its hard to do on the way to work. AND if there is lots of traffic and shifting with that heavy clutch its a pain in the ***.

would have to disagree with this. i had a 997S before the GT3 and the way the 2 cars drive and behave is apparent at every speed.

GT3 will give you a street or track
