REALLY notchy stick

I have been breaking in a new 2010 GT3 for the last several weeks. Taking it easy, keeping revs below 4200 as per the manual. The stick throws getting into gear have been very notchy. It goes into gear and not grinding at all but actually getting it into the gear still very notchy. I thought this would pass as I broke in the car. I now have 1600 miles on it and still the same. I am bringing it in for first oil change and inspection for track event soon. Should I have them open up the transmission and take a look or is this "just the way it is"?

This is normal. I once heard the GT3 tranny & shifter described as a "bolt action rifle." If you think about it, this analogy is perfect. You must be very deliberate in your shifts. There cant be any "mush" between the gears.... a 1st - 2nd shift requires a firm pull down - to the right - and firm pull down. There is no "sliding" it in like with other cars. The syncros are steel instead of brass which I hear contributes to the stiffness.... this also beefs it up for the track abuse.

Yep, normal. The good news is that at 13000 miles my 997 GT3 stills feels just as notchy as it did on day one. You will get used to the shifter over time.

That's what she said....

In reality though, just don't "force" it in. Find the gates if you will and just be precise. If you learn/feel the pattern you'll find it goes in very nicely

i found mine got better at about 6000km. when the car was new i found 3rd to be very notchy, especially when cold. now the gear oil i guess warms up much quicker so it easier to shift but still its notchy.

also i found out if you slip the clutch from stop which happened to me once or twice(not drag racing but just want to go move quickly from stop) the next few shifts feel very bad sort of like gears grinding.anyone else experinced this?why does this happen?

A fast shift at 8000+ revs and the notchyness will be forgotten. It all makes sense when you drive the car hard.

You should ask them to check the shifter, which is quick and easy to do. It's probably fine. I had the Porsche sport shifter put in my 6 GT3, which is probably the shifter in your car. It is a bit notchy, but when you get used to it, it's fine. As others have said, never force anything. The second/third shift was tricky for me a few times. I would subconsciously put a bit of lateral force on the shifter, and it would stick between third and fifth. I finally learned to let the shifter do its job, since it is spring-loaded, and will put the shifter in the proper gate gate for third gear with no lateral force at all.
