I may be mistaken, but I think its not beach wood, its balsa, the lightest available wood and certainly an homage to the 917 race cars which used that to minimize weight.

Yes, this is right. 917 is balsa, Carrera GT is beech. I didn't mean to suggest the 917 used beechwood.
