Cut down my 997 Cup Lip

Hi -
fyi in case anyone might me interested in this DIY mod -
I have a lowered 997 C2S with an aerokit bumper and cup lip. I wanted it lowered primarily to deal with the tire-fender gap, and for a generally more aggressive look. I wanted the Aerokit spoiler for that aggressive look. I bought one used that came with a cup lip and heard it's 6 of one, half-doz of the other, regards to stock aerokit lip and cup lip: ie Cup lip is bigger, but more flexible.
I love the low stance and the aggressive look of the front - very low, but it is way too low. I'm hitting my lip on everything - driveway, speedbumps, and even some normal street driving.
So - rather than lift the car back up, I decided that I'd prefer to have a smaller lip. I checked on with a forum sponsor who is open to doing custom stuff, but they thought that the business case of producing a low-profile lip was not sound enough. Since I couldn't buy one, I decided to cut down my own lip, figuring it was ready for the trash anyway.
Here are some before and after photos:

before

after

It's not perfect, but it'll do for now

(my son wanted those smiley's added)

I figure that either I'll continue to shave it down to a more even profile as I drive it, or I'll take it off and clean it up some more. I also might buy a new one and play with that, but I'm not ready to take that risk yet. I used a jigsaw and it was certainly not easy, with varying contours, etc. I think I cut off between 1 and 1.5 inches - I know it's hard to make that out from the photos.
I'd bet the untrained eye would not even notice the DIY, not knowing about various lips, and assuming nobody would be dumb enough to hack up such a thing, but the trained eye would nearly puke. With that said, I'll need to further perfect this, but I'm hoping it eliminates some of the aggravation of daily driving, 1k miles/month +

I'm running the cup car front end and it gets annihilated on the road too. Definitely a practical way to dealing with the irritation of scraping everything bigger than a speck of dust on the road. But I wont be cutting it simply because I worry that it would really negate the aerodynamics that the car needs at high speed and on the track as the low splitter would minimise under body airflow disturbance. And my RS is not a daily driver so I can live with the occasional grind...

Good idea, but they are fairly cheap to replace. Picked mine up from GMG for 170 plus shipping I believe.

I think my car is just way too low in front, given my driving style and the roads, etc that I travel on. My car scrapes on when I turn through two common intersections of my daily commute. I have trouble with speed bumps, and driveways. I read through various threads and bought some Gorilla Tape - that lasted all of two days before it got chewed up. I really needed a better solution than buying new lips - cuz they'd only last two days before looking like crap. I figured my only other choice was raising the car, which I prefer to avoid. Ideally, I perfect this mod - so it looks good enough for daily driving, but also have a nice lip for cars and coffee or some other special event. When I start tracking the car and I'm worried about aero, I could put on an unmodified one. Mine is actually just held on with the tabs, so it comes right off...

Mine was held on the same way, very convenient when I knew I was pulling into a steep drive way- just hopped right out and yanked it off then put it back on after leaving. JEllis, another user on here posted a nice thread about some stuff that he uses to keep his lips looking nice. Here is the link to that thread..

Mikymu, also another member also has found a alternate route that he uses, and here is the link to his thread. I've never used either option, but they both look as if they help.

Thanks...
I've read all those threads and I bought the Foever Black based on Jason's suggestion and I like it. I also bought the Gorilla tape based on that other thread but that just ripped right off. Like I said, I think my problem is more severe that these others. The new idea is to take the lip off for low clearance areas but that would be tough on my commute as it would have me having it off more than on. I'm surprised nobody else has such a drastic issue as I do...

Not sure but I went to check out my cup splitter, and it sure doesn't look much worse than yours.... I am guessing you just don't like the grinding it does whenever you use the car.

That's certainly most of the issue. That grinding is like fingernails on the chalkboard. Also, I'd eventually like to get into a situation where the car looks better, with less hassle. I use the Forever Black, or the tape, and it only lasts a couple of days. I'm liking this solution as it looks better, longer. Btw, meant to start getting the word out that I'd like to recycle a couple of seriously scraped up cup lips for additional practice and perfecting my method of cutting. Please let me know if anyone wants to donate one. I'd pay shipping of course
Thanks Jack

Still looking for used lips to perfect my technique, and still expecting that others can benefit from this - we'll see. My wife had to drive my car for a couple of days recently and she said that the lip scraping pretty much ruined the experience for her. I still need to get this sorted out...
Let me know if you have a used/trashed lip that you want to donate. I'll pay for shipping plus a small bit of $$ for convenience, but mostly it would be a donation to someone looking to help myself and the community with a rogue mod. PM if you can help out -
TIA
Jack
