Buying advice -- 2003 GT2

Found a 2003 GT2 with low miles. Do the GT2s have the same IMS/RMS issues as other 996s?

Also, are there any other issues that I should watch out for?

I plan to have a PPI and DME performed prior to purchasing.

Thanks.

PPI and DME scan are certainly the smartest pre-purchase investment you can make. The GT2 has the same Metzger block that the Turbo and GT3 have, and it doesn't suffer from all the maladies of the standard 996 engines...so that likely won't be an issue at all. Get your inspection done by a certified Porsche shop and you'll have a lot of peace of mind. Best wishes to getting that GT2!

Wow good find. Providing the PPI checks out, sounds like a great deal, congrats.

I've been quietly browsing this site for a while as it offers a lot of good info. I usually don't say much on forums but as 911cv had mentioned about buying an used GT2 and PPI, I would like to share my recent experience.

I picked up an 05 GT2 with 8000 miles from a local used car dealer about 2 weeks ago. BTW-I paid a lot more than $69k. The car was PPI by a local Porsche dealer and received a clean bill of health (some minor issues were fixed by the used car dealer before my purchase) so I went ahead and did the purchase. The day I took delivery, I could not put gas into the tank. It turned out to be a flap was misaligned inside the gas filling area and it cost more than $300 to fix the problem at the same Porsche dealer.

I then noticed some noise coming from the front end of the car and it turned out to be a seized bearing on the upper strut mount. The same Porsche dealer recommended to change both sides and it would cost about $2000 with discount.

I also found out that the gas filler door did not lock when the car is locked. It turned out to be a rubber clip was missing. This one the Porsche dealer replaced for free as the part cost only about $1.

The people at the dealer are nice but the PPI just was not thorough enough. I am actually quite disappointed. So, do not just trust the PPI 100% even if it were done at a Porsche delaer. I had a similar experience when I purchased an 02 TT 2 years ago.

GT2 is a great car. This is the 3rd 996 I've owned and I did not encounter major issues but the somewhat frequent minor things did drive me crazy sometimes. Hope 911cv will have better luck. $69k is a great deal provide that you don't have to put more money into fixing. Good luck.

Greetings all. OP, I heard of a black low mileage GT2 in NC a number of months back. It had been on an auction lot for ~3 yrs. Not sure what being stationary and outdoors does to a car, and not sure this is the same one...but the price does seem a little low, and you're in NC. Good luck.

Samm, sorry to hear about your experience.

I often wonder if every Porsche dealer does the same checks when they do a PPI. I've been looking at several Porsches all over the US for the past year (yes, still looking for the perfect compliment to my 997) and consistently get difference PPI quotes from dealers...typical range is about $175-$450...some include a DME and some do not.

It was a bit of a bad luck on my side and I don't want others to experience the same. The GT2 I bought had been sitting around for about 2 years without anyone driving it. The original dealer simply asked for too high a price and it was not sold. I had actually offerred to buy 2 years ago but the dealer just rejected.

I am happy to get it this time even though it wasn't the cheapest. Since the car had not been driven for such a long time, that probably explains why I had a misaligned gas flap and seized bearing. Please watch out for those kind of issues when you are buying a super low mileage car.

As far as the PPI standard is concern. I don't even know if there is one among all of the Porsche dealers. You may want to get a copy of their check list and compare.

I also have a 997 C2S Cab. My kids just love it especially it's a convertible. However, once I got the GT2, driving the C2S is almost like driving a sedan. It's substantially less power and quieter. Don't get me wrong, I still love my 997. However, GT2 is a totally different car. I LOVE the ride. Good luck with your purchase.

$69k for an 03 with those kinda low miles for a 996 gt2 seems a little fishy...I would look into that one carefully ...just recently an 02 w 18k miles got $70k at a reduced cost from $80k and theres one in sf for sale in great shape for around $76K....these cars get 70+ to close to $100k or more for the super rare late builds....they were super low number build cars, very raw and visceral...and the last of the pure turbo porches (no psm, no pasm etc...) truly a beast of a car...the widowmaker!

We service plenty of GT2's probably the most in the country with over 30 cars in the local area and have GT2's trucked in from as far as the mid west.

We have also owned and developed our white GT2 since 04..

Its probably the last real "raw" Porsche made, ultra reliable and does very well with mild tweaks.. Our car makes a ton of power and has been ultra reliable over the years.

Just like any other thing that is now 7-8 years old have it looked at and inspected.

If you like it, buy it.. You will be all smiles for a very long time.

When the time comes and you are ready to take it to the next level let us know..
We know how to make those cars go "fast"

Also check excellence magazine our car was featured a few years ago.. Pretty cool write up.

Below are the links to the article.......... Check it out.
