4.0RS now or wait for 991 GT3RS??
save your money and keep your RS. worse case, you get a deal on a lightly used 4.0 when the 991 comes out.. if you sell your RS now and pay MRSP for the 4.0 you simply threw you money away. And if you don't track, you're not even really using your current RS to it's full abilities. So what do you gain with .2 more liters and some $600 ball joints? seems crazy to me.... FYI, 4.0 is the "latest and greatest".
Porsche is in the business of selling cars. They will always improve upon past cars. The 4.0 is amazing for sure. But there is not a single example in history where Porsche did not improve upon a past generation with a new generation. 4.0 will be special due to last GT1 engine... but why would Porsche switch engines for all cars, including racing program... it they didn't have a better platform.
Personally, I would not trade a mk2 RS for a 4.0. I would trade a mk1 RS for a 4.0 though... that is a bona-fide improvement.
What real RSR parts are you referring? lower control arms? ball joints?

Isn't the entire RSR crankshaft that is in the 4.0? Seems like aftermarket companies want around 40k to increase a 3.8 to 4.0 with 500 hp. At that price delta of 3.8 to 4.0RS price seems almost understandable.
I have not driven either (too rich for my blood
), so not sure if my opinion really counts. I am the kind of guy who is always interested in the newest and shiniest car out there. However, my vote goes for the 4.0 because it represents an end of an era as they retire the mezger engine. That has to count for something in terms of collectability.

A price hike of $20K for the 4.0 RS is justify compare with 3.8 RS but not $50K+. For that amount of money the 4.0 RS better come with all the bells and whistle found in GT3 R - the latest Cup car with peddle shifter , wide *** fender and shinny BBS wheels. 4.0 RS to me is like a bald head burn out 60 years old substitute teacher for the week before the young long leg 991 math teacher from Sweden step in and give all the prep school boys a jolt in mind and body.
Remember the bye bye car from Porsche when the last air cool 993 took a bow? Even Jerry Seinfeld took the bait on the last build 993 turbo and said "I will never sell it" ... and he sold it. How many of you now days look for a well appointed 993 to buy and dress up your stable?

If the money is not an issue, then why not get the 4.0 to have "the latest". Also, if you were going to keep the car for a long time as part of a collection, then the 4.0. If you are just going to enjoy it on the street then the difference isn't going to be worth the difference. Very, very, very few of modern cars are going to be "collectible" in the short term. Maybe 20+ years would be a different story but you CANNOT compare last air-cooled to any last 997, engine not withstanding.
I have a 4.0 RS coming in at msrp in about a month. Feel excited, somewhat lucky, but having some cold feet. Plan on keeping it for years, don't track, but still love these cars(currently have but selling a 3.8 RS). Would you wait for next gen 991 RS or take the 4.0 RS.? Also can anybody who has driven 3.8 and 4.0 give me an idea of engine/power differences in terms of how they feel? Do you think the 4.0RS will take a financial nosedive?
Looked at another way, for around $14k you can get the bling CF hood, fenders, and mirrors from the GT2 RS/4.0 RS. Roughly $5k will get every bit of rubber removed from the suspension, which is far more than what the GT2 RS/4.0 RS have. Another $10k will get you shocks that will blow away the factory 4.0 RS stuff. So $35k gets you a 3.8 RS (assuming that's what you own) that's as light as a 4.0 RS and will outhandle it on the track while still keeping $45k in the wallet. As for the power difference, you'll never miss it unless you're on track.
But to Savyboy's post, not sure why you'd want an RS if you're not tracking it. It's like buying an open-ocean racing boat to tool around a small lake. All it will do is leave you frustrated and/or get you arrested.

I have Gen2 3.8 RS and had a 4.0 RS allocation but gave it up. You're likley looking at around $80k out of pocket to make the swap. It might be worth it if the 991 weren't right around the corner and/or you were a track junkie.
