4.0RS now or wait for 991 GT3RS??
4.0RS now or wait for 991 GT3RS??
I have a 4.0 RS coming in at msrp in about a month. Feel excited, somewhat lucky, but having some cold feet. Plan on keeping it for years, don't track, but still love these cars(currently have but selling a 3.8 RS). Would you wait for next gen 991 RS or take the 4.0 RS.? Also can anybody who has driven 3.8 and 4.0 give me an idea of engine/power differences in terms of how they feel? Do you think the 4.0RS will take a financial nosedive?
If it was me, I would stick with the 4.0 RS. I am not the type to jump on the "newer is better" bandwagon. Plus, if you are going to wait for the next "best thing," how long are you going to wait, because there is always going to be the next best thing coming out, and you can wind up waiting forever. I cannot imagine NOT being thrilled with a brand new GT3 4.0 RS! It is a car that is going to be a force for a long time, plus you pretty much know what you are getting.
If it is going to drive you crazy not having the absolute latest version, then maybe you should wait. Only you know how your brain is wired.

R&T has a good article about the 4.0RS and does some comparison to the 3.8. It is true that there is always the next best thing, but you are on the cusp of a generational change and it is something to give serious consideration.
This advice coming from someone with a 996
so take it for what it's worth

If you threw the kitchen sink at your 4.0 spec you will take a (well-deserved
) depreciation bath when you sell it. If you spec'ed lightly not so much. The power difference is not that much. The suspension has more solid joints which make it a better track car. The carbon hood and fenders save weight, which makes it a better track car. The carpetry has much of the sound deadening removed which makes the cabin that much louder, and saves weight to make it a better track car.
991 GT3 by first impressions of the C2's should be a hell of a car.
Tough call on what to do...if you do buy the 4.0 I hope you have a change of heart about getting into track days.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Im sure quite a few of us out there are considering this same option. I am of the opinion that it is best to wait and see what porsche has in stall for the 991 GT3 and RS - then you will know what to compare the RS 4.0 with. I suspect that when the new 991 GT3/RS do come out, the 997 RS 4.0 will shine even brighter.
Seems like based upon you planned use (street only??) your primary interest is exclusivity / icon. Currenty the 4.0 rings that bell quite well. No telling how long it will be (2013-14?) before the 991 RS is that new exclusive icon.
Good luck.

2015 based on racing rules
Ok the racing rules for this class of cars requires you race the current form 3 years/seasons from last model year. Given the 4.0 is a 2012 model, that means the soonest Porsche can bring the new GT3 class (991) to the track and therefore your showroom wil be 2015. All the above per my Porsche dealer and the regional Porsche rep. So gonna be a long wait and IMO the 4.0 is super exclusove but will depreciate like ALL new cars. Only time will judge collectibility, but i think thid car is very special. If you wanna know what 500 HP feels like! Go see Alex at SW and ask for a ride in Kermit. My car feels sluggish compared to Kermit
If you want the 4.0 and have the means, get it. But make sure the 4.0 is what you really want as compared to a 3.8RS. Yes, there are some major differences beyond just the engine, but many accounts are that most 'amateur' drivers won't be able to bring them out, whether on the street or track.
If there's any current PCar that should hold it's value, it's the 4.0. But I'd take what Savy said seriously: all of the superfluous options are where the biggest hit is.

save your money and keep your RS. worse case, you get a deal on a lightly used 4.0 when the 991 comes out.. if you sell your RS now and pay MRSP for the 4.0 you simply threw you money away. And if you don't track, you're not even really using your current RS to it's full abilities. So what do you gain with .2 more liters and some $600 ball joints? seems crazy to me.... FYI, 4.0 is the "latest and greatest".
