Where to visit
Hi There.
I did just this sort of thing last summer. I flew into Munich, which is a really beautiful city for its history, art, architecture, etc. The first day I took a train to Pfaffenhausen, the home of Ruf. You may or may not want to do this depending on your passions. I love Ruf cars so for me it was a dream come true. They were extremely generous with me, and the manager took 45 minutes giving me a tour of the factory. Really impressive. He gave me a copy of the most recent updated Faczination video featuring the CTR3. He also directed me to a fantastic hotel in a gorgeous town one stop down the train tracks (the town of Pfaffenhausen is really tiny so I recommend the next one they tell you about).
Day two, I took a train to Stuttgart/Zuffenhausen for a tour of the Porsche Museum. Unfortunately, you need to book English tours of the factory several months in advance. I missed out on this. But I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT. The Museum is amazing, if you are a Porsche nut. I was there for literally 6 hours.
I was only there for 2 days. Like I said, if you're into exploring cities, Munich is amazing. Those are just a few ideas.
Let me know if you need any other information.

Fly into Frankfurt or Duesseldorf (cheaper) and rent a 911 from AVIS ($299/day, 200km free) and drive to the Nuerburgring (about 1 1/2 hours from FRA). Rent a track car (Swift or Corsa) for a couple of hours from one of the firms there and drive a couple of laps (takes about 15 min per lap and you're going to be tired after two or so including your car :-). Then drive 1 hour south to Heidelberg, stay overnight, drink enough Weizenbier and drive back on the A5 (4 lanes!) which is unlimited for a large part, and take the 911 to about as fast as it will go. I had a C4S up to 293Km/h :-). If you have time, drive to Stuttgart and visit the Porsche museum BUT be careful not to do this during rushhour traffic. Doesn't matter where you're from in the states but that is the worst traffic you'll ever experience! Weekends are okay as long as it's not in the middle of summer... I personally would go to the Audi museum on Neckarsulm (1/2 hours north of Stuttgart or about 1 hour from FRA). That's where they make the R8 and if it's a weekday, you might even get a tour.

With 4 days, it's better to have your trip well planned. There's not much you can do if you land on a Sunday and also keep in mind that the time difference between CDT and CEST is 7 hours. IMO, driving on the Autobahn is a must even though not all of them have no speed limit. I agreed that Germany is a beautiful country, you should do some sightseeing as well.
I've done several driving tours through Germany/Austria. It is a beautiful country, especially Bavaria.
Google Fast Lane Travel and take a look at some of the tours they do. I've actually had Peter book some custom tours for me. Expensive but well worth it. You can certainly do it on your own but it's nice to have everything pre-arranged and he knows EVERYONE - and they know him.
Anyway, here's a few ideas you may want to consider. Fly into Frankfurt and take the train to Stuttgart. It's very easy and convenient. Inside the train station in Stuttgart there is an Avis counter. You can pick up a 911 there. Directly across the street is the Graf Zeppelin Hotel. Depending what time you get in you can stay there and use that as your arrival/departure destination.
If you're insistent on seeing "car stuff", go to the Mercedes museum. It's much better than the porsche museum. Again, depending on when you get in, you can do this as you settle in your first day.
You can drive to Munich (about 180 miles) on the A8 (I think - don't have my map in front of me). If you're interested you can go to Dachau. Highly recommended. One of the best experiences of my life. If you go, get a guide. You can arrange this easily.
If you want to skip Munich you can leave Stuttgart and head towards Lake Tegernsee, stopping off at Neuschwanstein for lunch. Pretty sure it's the A6 south and then head west towards Fussen.
The drive to Lake Tengernsee is on a very nice scenic route, with the alps to your south. There is a beautiful hotel right on the lake called the Seehotel Uberfahrt.
You can then drive to Lindau on Lake constance thru the Alps and into Austria. Some of the best roads in Europe. Stay one night at the Bayerischer Hof hotel. Great view of Switzerland right across the lake.
Last morning head back to Stuttgart stopping off in Rothenburg, which is a great medieval village. make sure you check the crime and punishment museum.
The drive to Rothenburg from Lindau is on a great stretch of the autobahn. I think it's the A-96 merging with the A-7. About 200 miles of 150 mph bliss!
return the car back at Avis and check back in at the Graf Zeppelin.
Like I said, i've done several tours and i'm pretty sure the first one I did was 4 days. Very similar to what I wrote above. Obviously if you had more time that would make it much better.
If you want any more specific info. let me know.
Here's the link after I did my 1st trip about 4 years ago. It was 4 days so you can do something very similiar.

All of the suggestions are good ones. Granted you are limited to four days but if you have the chance to extend or squeeze something in, drive to the north to Leipzig and take a Porsche Driving class there.
