Questions about buying 996 GT3 MK2

I've been searching for a 996 GT3 and I'm curious what are the major areas of the car I should inspect before purchasing. Also what were the major problems of the 996 GT3?

I think this has been pretty well covered in this forum, but a short summary would be LSD (Guard Transmission - excellent service and product), pinning of coolant hoses as these tend to be problematic and a detailed PPI by marque specialist.

If you are having trouble here, you might try Rennlist as they have a specific 996 GT3 section.

I just tried one search using 996 GT3 PPI and got some hits. Although I did mention a PPI, it is worth mentioning explicitly that you will want to check over revs. Any reputable service provider should do that even if you don't ask, but no sense in assuming.

Excellence Mag did a great 2-3 part series on PPI if you can get you hands on it. Great depth on what to check and how much to pay. Articles were sometime this year.

Just went through this:

Get a PPI by someone YOU trust, you are interested in the following:

  • Coolant lines - fittings are epoxied and come loose (lots of threads on this), should be welded or pinned
  • LSD - wear out quickly - has it been serviced?...
  • Accidents - a lot of these have been wrinkled a bit esp if they are tracked...
  • Type 2 Overrevs - these can be really bad - but then the damage that they can cause (bent valves) can be fixed)
  • I like Leakdown - needs to be done properly
  • Compression
  • Get repair records
  • Understand the history of the car - was it raced, was it tracked - none of these are necessarily bad - just important to know
  • What mods were made to the car
