Test drove a new Huracan and Aventador back to back...Ended up with a GT3???
So back in December I flew out to Scottsdale to look at a Diablo I was buying. Turned out great, bought it and shipped it home
While I was out there I scheduled a test drive to drive the Huracan and an Aventador back to back as I was going to plan on purchasing one or the other in the near future. I've spent a little time in the Aventador and really had my heart set on one for the past year or so. But with all the excitement over the Huracan, I figured I'd better drive it to make sure it's not something I had to have.
I feel like I'm more of an analog guy as I've looked to buy a 458 Italia as well as a McLaren, but after driving both, they just didn't excite me. After driving them I couldn't wait to go home and drive my 6sp Gallardo, literally couldn't wait... I've felt the same with other DCT cars I've driven. They just don't seem to have enough soul to me. I get why people love them, but they're just not for me. With that said, the Huracan I liked, but didn't love. For that kind of money, I better LOVE it. Got back into an Aventador and while it's an EVENT to drive, something just didn't feel right about it. What I figured out was that it's a car I will own some day, but for $400k +/- depending what year, etc. you get, it's just not worth that much money to me. I'll be a buyer when they are under $300k as I LOVE the way the look and sound. Driving them is a bit more work though...
So I was getting ready to head back to the airport and drive home but I had some time to kill. So I was walking around and casually went into the Porsche dealer at Penske (by the way, Penske is the most incredible dealership group I've ever been to!!! They have every exotic brand made all in one MASSIVE facility). Anyways, there sat a 2014 Rhodium Silver 991 GT3. I was actually taken back by how much I loved just looking at it. Even after seeing the latest greatest Lamborghini had to offer (as well as the Ferrari's I just encountered next door), I was drooling over this car. I've never been a "Porsche guy". Always respected them, but never have owned one. I actually bought/sold a 2010 turbo PDK Porsche a couple years ago with a friend of mine that we got a good deal on. I'll be honest, that car did NOTHING for me (sorry to those that own and like them).
A salesman saw me drooling over this GT3 so I started talking to him about it. I told him how I liked the Huracan but didn't love it. And that the Aventador was awesome, but not worth the coin in my opinion. And after a few minutes of talking to him, I swindled him to let me test drive the car. I was glad to see it was a used car, so putting some miles on it wouldn't hurt anyone's feelings. I honestly feel guilty to a point because I literally had ZERO intentions of buying the car, I was just killing time and loved how this car looked, so I figured I'd see how it drove. The salesman was excited to take it out anyways, so no harm there.
Within the first mile of driving it (car was fully warm already) my jaw dropped. The way it sounded at 9k rpms, the way it sounded with down-shifting, the throttle response, and literally everything else about the car I LOVED. I was so confused!!! I knew any and all GT3 cars were supposedly "driver's cars", but I didn't think I'd like this car so much. Especially being a paddle shift car and even more so a DCT car. I seriously can't describe how I felt besides just being confused. The more I drove the car the more I fell for it. We only drove it about 10 miles but that's all I needed to figure out I may need one of these things!
So when we got back to the dealership I started changing my mindset of how to approach these salesmen about actually buying this car. Unfortunately, I had ZERO education on what the market is for these cars. Fortunately I'm extremely stubborn and patient, and have never made a purchase I regretted down the line because I analyze things to death until I'm certain. But with my confusion and excitement I attempted to purchase this car. It was a 2014 with 2k miles and they wanted $169k for it (I think they still have it for sale) despite it only stickered for $162k. I about signed on the dotted line, but I hadn't eaten all day and my brain literally was hurting as it was almost 3pm at this point. So I told them to let me go eat and I'll be back. While eating I did some digging to find these cars really are hard to come by and that they did in fact already cease production. With that said, I am a little upset they were feeding me some bs with the fact there were none available and that the only ones online that were cheaper were branded title cars from the engine recall stuff that went on. Turns out of course that's not the case. And I also called my local dealer to ask their GT3 specialist about the details of these cars.
Turns out my local dealer in Oklahoma City who only gets 3-4 allocations for cars like this per year had one inbound. They had a Turbo S that another dealer wanted so they took the GT3 allocation in trade. My salesman told me there would be one on the lot withing 2 weeks! And it was spec'd out just how I would want one with steel brakes and less options (I didn't feel the need to pay for some of those crazy expensive options that I would never need such as the LED lighting etc., that's just me, plain and simple). So not only would I be getting a brand new 2015 with zero miles on it, it was $25k cheaper and spec'd out with the brakes I prefer (since I plan to track the car). I called the Scottsdale dealer back and told them of my revelation over the past 30 minutes and he sounded like he didn't believe me. But that's not my concern
Anyways, the car showed up here just after New Years and I couldn't be more pleased! It's painful having to do the "break-in" but I'm driving it everywhere to expedite the process. I don't think I'll make it the full 2k miles, but I'll do my best! I was out of town for a week and now the car is getting a full clear bra from front to back, so I don't have any great pics besides IPhone pics, and not many at that. Once I get it back, I'll take some proper pics

Great story. Appreciate the honesty. I have a hunch that most of us go through similar mental gymnastics despite being "thinking men". I have a few similar stories. My pattern is to buy a car & if the seller takes too long getting me the car, I end up spontaneously buying something else. Congrats on a bad *** machine. Can't wait to see some good pics.
Wow, just wow...
Congrats on both purchases BUT:
Nothing personal but the 458 Italia may be the fastest, purest driving experience one can purchase on the planet earth. Unless you are simply not a Ferrari fan I am blown away it didn't excite you. It's out raws and analogs the mighty GT3 by a fair margin. Not sure what McLaren you drove but I almost echo the same....
Your are very lucky to have driven all of these cars!

After saying all that, I wouldn't trade my $100k 6sp Gallardo for a 458. I LOVE my G. And the GT3 is growing on me more and more as I get miles put on it!!

I assume you've owned or driven one? Honestly, sound is a HUGE factor to me. The Porsche shocked me at the sound it made. The ferrari disappointed me. With all that said, if I could add a 458 to the stable, I'd love to. But for the money it didn't move me like I feel like a car that expensive should. Slammed with good wheels and I think it may be my favorite looking car on the road!

So you haven't owned or driven a 458? How can you say its the fastest and purist driving experience on the planet? LOL!

One vs. the other, really????
This is a funny thread…humors me to no end. All these rich guys blabbering about which car is best. The truth is, they are all amazing products, and ALL of them stir the senses and each person has different interpretations of "art" and thats why their are so many good cars being produced today.
I too have owned every car talked about in this thread, driven the **** out of all of them, and yes "for the money" the 991 GT3 is the winner, by far.
However, if I was "really rich" I would drive my lowered and sinister looking black Ferrari F12 every day and not give a rats **** as it stomps the GT3 in every way possible. My 458 spider and coup were also amazing amazing cars, faster than a GT3 and sound better and shift equally as well.
My Mclaren 12c was also very cool, but I am not a turbo car guy, LOVA N/A, always will and no matter how good the 488 is, I don't want one, don't like turbos, etc…again, art is art and thats why there are so many great cars.
HOWEVER, because I am not "that rich" the depreciation of hammering on my F12 daily always sits in the he back of my head, it's over double the cost of my 991 GT3, and honestly, I almost always find myself in the GT3. I am just "rich enough" to not care about daily driving this beauty/beast and it always ticks the right boxes when I am in it (speed, sound, engaging, road feel, handling).
Again, I am laughing, everyone trying to say what is a better product when they are all so capable and amazing (way beyond what anyone should be doing on the street in them) that this whole thread should erase itself, it's really that irrelevant.
Never Lift my friends, we are all blessed to be able to add to this thread in the first place.
Cheers,
