I was just going to ask you about those cars. I also just saw them earlier on Nasioc.com and wanted to see if you knew about them. I guess you are just too on top of your game.

Good stuff like this travels quickly. I actually found the photos this morning in the F1 forum I moderate. They had been posted by a regular contributor, but even he didn't find them on NASIOC.com. Thanks for the tip though, as that is where they appear to have originated from and I was able to send a note to a user there in hopes of gathering more information on the cars.

Jason - pics from there taken by you would no doubt be incredible. Unfortunately it seems to be a private facility and getting in (especially with the camera) might be a difficult task.

If you do make it in the door though, the thing that would be most appreciated is confirmation on exactly which two chassis' those F1s are. Even better than that would be shots of the two car's chassis plaques. You'll find them located on the right chassis spar, just ahead of the shifter location, to the right of the driver (same place in a road car for those who care). If they won't open the cars for you then you should still be able to see/photograph the plaque through the windshield from overhead.

Here's an example of the short tailed GTR interior/chassis plate:

Here's an example of what the longtail should look like:

For those curious on the difference between the two shifters - McLaren had a company called Xtrac develop a sequential shifting version of the F1's transmission for the longtail GTRs to speed up shifts and reduce the chances of a misshift. The standard shifter is cable-actuated (even on the road cars) through the chassis, whereas the sequential is rod-actuated and runs back through where the right passenger seat would be.

I just got off the phone with them and I was VERY disappointed. It was clear that they won't let ANYONE in unless you work there. He mentioned they might have a media day near the end of the ALMS and I could see the McLaren's then. I was asking who took the pictures of the McLarens and posted them online and he just hung up the phone on me. There is no doubt I will keep in contact with them and keep on trying to see the cars. I have a couple ideas of how I can get in and I will see what I can do.

Don't let it get you too frustrated - afterall they are a business and not a museum or the like. For insurance purposes they may need to be careful who they let in and out. Persistence may prove to be a good thing - just don't get yourself arrested in the process.

Stroll's F1 is one of the remaining McLaren mysteries. I have seen two sets of photos of the car, both taken on the same day in July 2001 at Stroll's race track - Le Circuit Mont Tremblant. One set of photos claimed that the car belonged to Stroll specifically, the other doesn't have any text to go along with the pics. That link is still active, and you can see the car here:

This F1 looks like no other than I am familiar with in North America. As you can see from the pics, it's a unique shade of Metallic Grey. You can't tell from those shots, but the three other pictures I have of the car from that day at the track show it to have a dark grey or black interior with a red driver's seat insert. The seats have been refitted to what is known as GT-spec - mimicing the F1 GT's interior.

Unfortunately efforts to find out any real details on the car have proved futile so far. Associates of Stroll's dealership, Ferrari of Quebec, have inquired with the staff there for me and so far none of them have been able to confirm that he even owns a McLaren F1. Other enthusiasts have approached his support staff taking care of his cars at different track events at Mont Tremblant and again no one seemed to know about the F1. Honestly, someone who is this much of a public figure in the motoring world should have a harder time keeping a secret if there is an F1 hiding in their garage.

There isn't a total blackout of info on the car. There have been at least two people who confirmed that he still owns the car. One story teller claimed that the car is kept in an underground garage at his home in Canada. Neither one had the important details though like the chassis number which is most interesting to me. Adding to the credibility of the underground garage story, this photo appeared online which shows what appears to be an identical F1 in a location that could easily match that description. I'm not sure who the girl is, but the car does appear to have been sitting a while with all that dust on it.

The interesting thing about Canada and a car like the McLaren F1 is that there is no "Show or Display" exemption for cars like that up there as we have in the USA. They do have a rule that allows for any car built more than 15 years prior to be imported, but the first production F1 was completed at the end of December 1993, so its still too early for any F1 to get into Canada through that loophole.

Another interesting suspicion that I've had about Stroll's car is that it is possibly another escapee from Brunei. This is pure speculation on my part mind you, but in mid-2000 Stroll and a business partner purchased the London jeweler and luxury goods retailer "Asprey" from the Brunei Investment Agency. For those who read through the FHM article, you'll recall that was one of Prince Jefri's failed investments. Ever since I learned of that transaction I have suspected that Stroll may have made one or two more purchases from Brunei at the same time, including this F1.

If you know something more about his car - and it sounds like you do - I would love to hear whatever you can share. This F1 is one of only two that I am aware of in North America that I can't quote the chassis number of and that's the kind of thing that will drive a guy like me nuts.
Oh i feel Special! I know more about a curtain McLaren F1 then the legendary Peloton!

Lawrance Stroll Does indeed own this McLaren F1. I have a confirmed source whos friends with Stroll, I personally asked him if Stroll still owned the F1. He emailed me the next day confirmed that Stroll does indeed still own it, This was back in Fall of 2005. So its possible since then its gone.

Regarding Ferrari of Quebec employes, they will deny Stroll owning any of the cars he actually owns. His collection Consists of 37 Ferrari's as of last Summer, He recentely acquired an FXX and a F430 Challenge car, hes up to atleast 39 Ferrari's now. I know he also owns a Porsche 959 and of course the McLaren F1. The employees will always deny him owning these cars, because they don't want to draw attention to him.

I'm often at Circuit Mont Tremblant for different events, Stroll owns this track so hes often there with some of his cars. Sadly i have yet to see him in the McLaren F1. This coming June ill be seeing him at the track, and if i strike conversation with him, ill defentely ask about the F1.

He has 2 homes. One in Mont Tremblant Quebec where he keeps most of his cars, and then one in Mont Royal(Part of Montreal). I've heard rumours of the McLaren F1 once been spotted at his Mont Royal home. I've also heard in the summer of 2004 Stroll could be spotted almost every Saturday lapping the McLaren F1 at Circuit Mont Tremblant, but I;ve only heard this through word of mouth, i have no other proof.

A guy i meet once at Circuit Mont Tremblant told me a funny story of Stroll and his McLaren F1. He was driving it on Decaire(Highway 15 in Montreal, very close to where his Dealer is) and the car actually broke down and was sitting on the side of the road. It was brought to a local BMW dealer and he had McLaren mechanics sent on the next flight to Montreal from England. He knew someone working at the BMW dealer who called him up and got to see the car privetly during the night! I can't quote a date of when this happened as I dont remmeber when he told me. But i would assume it was in 2001, because thats when the F1 was spotted the most.

Of course I recall, and I recall that Old Guy was the one you were conversing with. I don't always like to name names when it comes to sources of info as some people share things on the DL, ya know.

Anyway, that's great to hear that Stroll still had the car as of 2005. Now all we need is a chassis number. It would be nice if my other suspicion that this car came out of Brunei could be confirmed too, but that's a long shot.

That's XP4, the 4th road car prototoype, owned by Larry Blair who lives in the San Jose area.

This car originally belonged to the Sultan of Brunei. It came to the USA after a stop in the UK at McLaren for a mild refresh and was Gary Schaevitz' first F1. The car still has "issues" brought on by it's original owner that were not resolved during the refresh and it will likely never sell for the price that SVAG wants for it. It should be there a while unless they can find someone with deep pockets that loves the #014 (it's chassis number) or really likes the color yellow and has money to throw around. I haven't seen it in person yet but I hear the car needs some paint work, is missing some of the items that are normally included with the car, and has not received any of the updates other F1s have had that sell for the price SVAG is asking.

Larry Ellison's F1 is still here in CA, though it was sold to someone else this year. I have the new owner's name somewhere but can't remember it off the top of my head. It stayed local to the bay area when it was sold - Larry had it in a plane hangar in Atherton and claimed he hardly ever drove the car. Rumor has it that the car was traded during the purchase of an Enzo that was given to his son as a graduation present. (Must be nice ) It is chassis #062 and is silver/black.

Elon Musk owns chassis #067 and lives in Bel Air, CA. He commutes to his office in El Segundo in the F1 about once a week I am told. He was the former CEO of PayPal, but now runs a company called SpaceX. That car is also silver/black.

Jay Leno owns chassis #015 and keeps it in one of his garages in Burbank, CA near the airport. The car is black/black with a red stripe on the vent line of the door.

The last CA car I'm aware of in CA is #028 and as mentioned above, it's new owner remains a mystery. Should be in the Newport/LaJolla area.

The car in the Exotic Spotter photo is actually red, and to my knowledge has never been to Crystal Cove. It only moved that area late last year. It would be great if the new owner would show up there one weekend with the car.

Larry sold his because he couldnt look at it anylonger, i have a $30K bet race on tape with his F1 vs. (cant say who) Supra that happened 3 years ago, Larry got spanked BAD. After the race larry starts threatening everyone with legal action if the tape was ever published.
