McLaren F1 for sale
SubscribeAwesome info as usual! You rock man. Thanks.
The story behind the color of chassis # 11 is great. It's a very unique and beautiful color.
I find it really surprising that Paul Stewart loaned out # 023 for the Brundle video. I actually didn't know it was his car until you mentioned it. I remember reading a thread on another forum (I believe it was Automotive Forums) where a forum member ran into Paul filling up the F1 at a BP gas station. While talking to him, Paul had supposedly stated to the starter of the thread that he had never taken the car above 70 mph.
It's quite surprising then that he let Brundle thrash it.
One more question.....do you know how many McLaren F1's reside in the United States? Counting road cars, the 1 LM and GTR's.
By the way is chassis # 023 Paul's or Jackie's?
Thank you.

I didn't comment on it in the AF.com thread, but I do believe that if Paul really said that he was absolutely kidding. The guy has racing in his blood - there's no way he hasn't put his foot into it more than once. He probably gets tired of answering the 'How fast have you gone in it?' question and says that to amuse himself. I know I would. Originally Posted by Phoenix

As for letting Brundle have a go with it - that man is a master behind the wheel. I wouldn't hesitate to toss him the keys to my F1. Of course I'd want to be in one of the passenger seats - not so I could watch him, mind you, but rather for what would most likely be the most amazing experience of my life. At the limit in an F1 with a highly capable driver must be incredible.

Current best guesstimate - 21 road cars (3 with HDF Kit), 3-5 GTRs, 1 LM. One more question.....do you know how many McLaren F1's reside in the United States? Counting road cars, the 1 LM and GTR's.

Tiff Needel asked a similar question of Sir Jackie Stewart once on 5th Gear. Check out what he had to say about it: By the way is chassis # 023 Paul's or Jackie's?
Right-click - "Save Target As..." again.
Thanks should go out to drphibes for continuing to host the two videos I have linked to.

Eric,
Both of those videos were great. I forgot to comment on the MIRA video. It's a great clip. Further proof of how well engineered the F1 was.
On the 2nd video.....heck I would be selfish too if I had a F1!
Well I don't have anymore questions...............for right now anyway.
I'll post up on this thread when I think of some more.
Thanks again Eric.

Thanks again Eric.Well that didn't last long..........do you have any videos of the LM? The only clips I've seen are when Mr. Selldorff had his and he was driving it away from TMS and when he was on the highway.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Here's the only two I have of an LM besides the ones you mentioned - neither one is all that spectacular though. The first is a video of LM3 departing a car park while competing in the Gumball 3000 in 1999 when David Morrison still owned the car. The second one is just a walkaround video someone made in 2003 when the car was on display at the Bavarian Autosport show - it has no sound.

These next three vids show the next best thing - an F1 GTR. The first one is quite small, so you'll want to double the size for viewing. It's JJ Lehto behind the wheel of what would eventually be the LeMans winning GTR #01R prior to race, discussing the car's handling and performance. The second is a lap of the LeMans circuit in 1995 with Yannick Dalmas driving - the in car shots come from the same GTR (#01R), but there are several other F1s shown. The third is a video someone made at Limerock of GTR #17R. BMW USA owns this GTR and keeps it here in the USA, bringing it out regularly to motorsport events like the Vintage Festival held at Limerock. If you watch just one of these videos, make it the last one. The sound is simply incredible.

Let me know if anyone has issues with Rapidshare and I can probably find another host for the vids.

Your F1 knowledge base is VAST! Thanks for ALL of the great info.
And I thought I was a car enthusiast.
I'm wondering, how do you feel about the Sultan hoarding 3 LM's? I think its awful, personally. Along with the rest of his ridiculously large collection of garage queens.

Don't get down on yourself - there are few people in the world who take their passion for a brand/car to this level. I like Duesenbergs, but I'm no Randy Ema. I like old Bugatti's, but I'm no Paul Russell. One of the things that drives my research on F1s is that when I started there were very few people who seemed to know much about the cars and I wanted to know everything. And I thought I was a car enthusiast.

Well for starters, the Sultan himself is not the real culprit here - it was his brother Prince Jefri who really let things get out of hand over there. I often say that the cars belong to the Brunei Royal Family so as not to place full blame on the Sultan himself. I'm wondering, how do you feel about the Sultan hoarding 3 LM's? Initially I was a big fan of what the BRF had done. Creating the worlds largest collection of rare and exotic cars, comissioning companies like Rolls, Aston, Bentley, and Pininfarina to build unique one-offs or working examples of their concept cars, and employing mechanics of those companies to keep the cars running perfectly all sounds great to me. The down side being that when Jefri's spending habits were exposed and things all came crashing down the story goes that most if not all the cars were left to rot in the hot and humid climate of Brunei. Some say that the really special cars like the F1s have remained protected somewhat indoors, but the mechanics have all be sent home and a lot of the more desireable cars from Brunie have slowly been escaping. In many cases these cars are not in the greatest of shape, and need serious work to get them back to top level.
The thing that disappoints me the most though is the secrecy the family imposes and the fact that the only photos that exist of the collection (which was rumored to number near 3000-4000 cars) had to be taken covertly and snuck out of Brunei. If you are going to have a collection like that - share it with people!!! It would take you over 10 years to drive all those cars if you picked a different one every day and of course most of them were not driven regularly, if at all. To an enthusiast like me, that's just a disappointment.
Here are some scans which show some of those pictures. It's worth reading if you haven't seen them already:

This article is a bit less car-focused, but tells quite a story relating to Prince Jefri and the expenditures of the Brunei Royal Family.

Kind of disgusting the way money was so horribly wasted like that. The fact that some of the more special cars built for Brunei may never see the light of day saddens me - not to mention that several F1s may be over there rotting away too.
A good friend of mine who spends far more time concentrating on the Brunei Collection had this to say a while back:

A lot of the cars that are salvageable have "made it out". Quite a few made it to the US (Big engined/tuned/armoured/limo mercs etc) but safety requirements have hampered the efforts of others to get the other cars out. The cars are RHD and none have airbags so its hard to export them. These are "regular" cars (Ferrari 355's etc) and a few have made it to AU and NZ but not many. The cars that are worth keeping are kept in warehouses but are not maintained and not driven. The others however, are left outside to rot. There is a place called "the reef" where hundreds of tuned/rare optioned mercs are sitting outside. The heat and humidity in brunei have completely ruined these cars. The leather has "melted" and is sagging off the steering wheels, they are essentially decomposing. The only thing these cars would be good for is an artificial reef. These have rare options like wood interiors and have large engines (some tuned) but can't go anywhere because no airbags and rhd. It is a waste of epic proportions. People are always trying to "get some cars out" but none will come out anytime soon. The rare ones that have (like the ones pictured in the top gear article that i scanned and is on page 1 of this thread) are long gone. I'm sure the new owners had to sign something saying they can't drive the cars in public or let anyone see them. Remember, "Officially" these cars were never made!
We can only hope that some of the rarer cars will make it out soon, but thats a long shot. There are still 5-8 mclaren f1's there (depending who you ask). Only 1 has made it out, that was a few years ago and from what i've heard, it was in very bad condition.
The car he is referring to there at the end was #014, the yellow F1 at SVAG we have discussed already in this thread.A lot of the cars that are salvageable have "made it out". Eric,
Thanks for the videos. That last one like you said was awesome! Those
reverberations as it flew by was the best part.
Thanks for the BRF articles as well. I've read the C&D a long time ago but it was nice to re-read it. That FHM article on Prince Jefri was absolutely disgusting. That's all I'll say. How can a person be so foolish.
Man I hope those 3 LM's somehow make it out in decent shape.
By the way is 54F1GT in Brunei?

The black GT is still a bit of a mystery. One story claims it went to the Brunei Royal Family and another has it hidden away in a collection in the UK owned by a man named John Studdlehome (SP?). If anyone has any leads, I'm all ears.

Erik, Do you know anything about Lawrance Strolls McLaren F1 road car? I know that its grey and thats about it. I actually have a pretty funny story about the car breaking down.
Well I haven't followed this thread, but just perused through the whole thing and wow there is alot of F1 knowledge in here. Heres my contribution, looks to be the F1 that was for sale at the beginning of this video (wait through the intro).

Great Post! Your wealth of knowledge is impressive, I hope one day you will have one of your own.
Is this the one that just sold?
This was at Concorso Italiano about 4 years ago, I took these pics..

I just spend 4 hours reading all the stuff, there is so much information.
Thanks for providing us with all this informaitons.
I have one question, what kind of Tire do F1 use.
I knot is is made by Michilin, it is a special Pilot line just for F1.
can you please give me more informaiton on it.
what kind of tire, what other tires have owners use..
size and how $$$.
better picture of the tire.
and have you seen any F1 using aftermarket wheel, I just wanted to see what the car will look like if someone had put bigger wheels on it.
