GT3 or R8 opinons?
I would go for the GT3, I love how striking the rear valance looks especially in lighter colours and those centre exhausts in the rear bumper. In addition why should I pay more for a car that can barely exceed the 997 C4S.

The magazine time really gotten my attention with the R8. Especially the 1/4 times vs track times which i find amazing.
I would really like to see the lambo Vs R8 in handling. Is the R8 better than then lambo sister car if it had the same engine? We will wait and see i guess.
I don't care for the side profile of the R8 but otherwise I think it is a great car. The track tests speak volumes about its capability. The interior is years ahead of the 911. In my mind, the main question about the R8 is - How will it do with time? One of the great things about a 911's is the history/heritage help it age better than most other sports cars in the market.
BTW, If you are thinking of buying a R8 today - you are going to be waiting a long time. I was trying to put a deposit in Dallas and the dealers basically blew me off or wanted $20k for 2008/2009 delivery.

how much heavier is the G-car's V10 vs the Audi V8 anyway?

I think a Audi R8 Targa or Roadster will be out soon, Its an interesting car however due to its pricing I wouldnt consider it. Over here its priced like a Fully Loaded 997TT without PCCB's.
IMHO, when the V-10 and diesel R8 debut, I am thinking that R8 V8 value will get hammered... in three years I am thinking the V8 is a $65-75K car... which is pretty bad considering the premiums people will be paying...
However, there is a market for the R8 -- Audi brand loyalists finally have a reason to stay with Audi when they are looking for 2 door hi-po car... they will no longer need to look to the likes of Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo etc...
In my experience, people that like Audi cars, really like them... ultimately when the "newnes" wears off these will end up in the hands of Audi loyalists and I think a three year old R8 V8 will be a performance bargain.
Of course Audi will create some new customers that have never shopped Audi before becasue this is a market that they have not been able to participate in to date. Reviews are clearly marketing it as the everday super car that you can drive for miles and miles comfortably etc (a la NSX) which will make it appealing to a certain crowd... while this may be true, I do not beleive that any current GT3 owners will be ditching their GT3s and daily drivers to consolidate into one R8...
If you are an Audi person -- the R8 will keep you happy and keep you at Audi... If you are not an Audi person, you may buy one, and it may convince you to stay... I am certain that Audi hopes so..
You will not be prying my fat *** out of a GT3 and M5 into an R8... and the V10 (by the time you can get one) will be priced in Ferarri/Lambo territory... please... R8 or F430... are you kidding me? I know I know Audi has won LeMans for 50 years straight... it still does not change the fact that I would rather have F430...
As previously mentioned the R8 is an absolute home run for Audi. Can you believe that we are comparing ring times for some of the best cars in the world and Audi's first try at this is even mentioned in the same breath? This is proof of how good the car is, but it will be an uphill battle to take customers in numbers from Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo etc...
Obviously just my opinion... FWIW I have not seen one in person, sat in one, driven one etc... so at this point I am just talking out of my ***... but I can tell you that if I had a chance to by a GT3RS at msrp or an Audi (V8, V10, Diesel) at msrp or even a premium -- the RS takes my money every time. I am partial to Porsche though if you could not tell...
