Improving the sound of the stock stereo system on a 996 GT3
Improving the sound of the stock stereo system on a 996 GT3
You heard it right! And I know, it's a discrace to have that stereo there in the first place...
BUT, since it's there, it should work right!?
I have to say that this is the worst system I have EVER heard, and I've heard some pretty crappy systems in the past years...
I'm not looking into dumbing 200lbs worth of audio-junk in my GT3 but what want is just to make the sound quality a tad better.
Assuming the amp on the stock stereo (I'm not gonna change it no matter what) is good enough for decent sound, the speakers must be horrible!?
Would it be possible to find better quality speakers that would fit right in and replace the stock ones? Has someone done this?
The sound is driving me nuts! Either I do something about it or then I just pull the whole damn stereo out off the car (...and save some weight while I'm at it)
plz help! My ears are crying!
I tried to search but ended up empty handed...

Juha -
You're not alone! While I love the combustive symphony as much as anyone, I've just about gone nuts with the audio output for those times when you're settled and puttering along in 6th...and I've already got a Europipe! Besides, I don't really see it as heresy to have a decent system in a GT3, just so long as at least the sub is carbon fiber...I spoke to a few shops about this, and the recommendation is universally to replace everything, and then some.
They all suggested I swap the door panels over to the hifi/bose version to mount mid woofers in the door panel and add a small subwoofer somewhere in the back for additional bass. I suspect that most, like myself, won't want to swap their door panels, so my best current plan is the following:
1. Replace head unit (one word: McIntosh) and replace front dash speakers with top-line Focal speakers to get the best front soundstage possible from that location; ignore the rear speakers if you want
2. Add 4-6 channel amp (bridge 2 channels for sub)
3. Add small 8-10" subwoofer low in the rear seating area
Additionally, I've heard it is possible to use the factory head unit with an external amp if you're that much of a fan. I've also seen a few examples of 8" midbasses installed in the passenger footwell area as well, which might be a good compromise over swapping out the door panels.
The guys below know everything about stereos in the 996, and have been great to talk to:

**SUPER-GT3-HERESY BONUS POINTS:**
If you really wanted to get some good audio out of it, you could add back some sound insulation behind the headliner to cut down on the echo, although I think I would miss the purposeful 'clunk' behind every door-slam...
Good luck and keep me posted...

Thanks for your input! Much appreciated!
Allthough, I think that sounds a little too much for my liking. (I wanna keep the car as light and as close to stock as possible).
Do you know if I could just add a small amplifier for the front speakers, use the OEM stereo (is there a line out?) and just change the speakers?
That way I wouldn't be adding more than 1-2lbs and that's peanuts. I can just sweat that much off before I enter the track....

After I changed the head unit I noticed a slight improvement in sound quality, but couldnt quite bring myself to add an amplifier and a sub. You can imagine the look on porsches face after they have spend countless hours and dollars trying to keep the wieght down and then we come along and cram in 50 lbs worth of audio gear because our favourite top forty one-hit-wonder isnt blasting loud enough for our nieghbours to hear our bad taste
