2004 GT2 analysis

My dear friend and bibliophile, mr. lester quam has bought an 04.

his findings:
-definitely not worth the upcharge vs a new 02/3
-power increase not discernible
-suspension changes not worth paying to upgrade but have some effect:

"I defy anyone to honestly say they can feel 20 Hp added to a 3100 pound car.
However the suspension on the 04 feels more responsive and lighter than the 02 GT 2 I previously owned. The master tech feels the same way.
You owners of the 02 and 03 GT2s are not missing any significant upgrades."

"In my opinion the ECU and suspension upgrades are absolutely not worth spending any dough to go from an 03 to an 04.
All you get in an 04 is an exclusive club of maybe 15 cars to the USA.
Nor would I worry about or expend any time to get the 04 ECU map for your car. I can't tell any difference at all and neither can my Porsche master tech.
But I ordered the exact car I wanted pimp red , thicker wheel, etc, and I plan to keep this one since I believe the GT 2 is extinct."

Les is a skilled and experienced Porsche fool like manyof us, and his opinion carries alot of value to me anyway...

and it's as sensible as having Hanibal Lechter as a lodger.

I think you’re all mad to have this manic monster as a live in pet, you know it’ll turn on you when you least expect it. It's still a barely controllable banzai beastie that’s ready to snap in a heart beat!

ANDREW.

GT2'S ARE TRULY EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

before you arrived on the scene, we had numerous events where Gt2's just ran away from their 12 year old drivers and crashed!!! sometimes just pulling out of the garage!!!!

Now we have 2 recent incidents of GT2's taking off and FLYING short distances before crashing, while their helpless owners picked their noses.

I personally had an episode in my first seal grey GT2, where smushing the loud pedal a little too firmly coming out of a second gear corner, the car actually went SIDEWAYS!!! Oh my Lord!!!! so scary!!! luckily, having driven 930's, i kept my foot in and drove out of it, but what about the poor unsuspecting liberal 12 year old, just out for a day drive? little do they know what lurks in the heart of a GT2 waiting to suck their blood!!!!!!

these cars "are for laying down and avoiding" as monty python used to say about Australian table wines. this is the type of evil, dangerous car only Dianne feinstein should be able to get a permit for, whilst for the masses it's banned

That was valuble info. I wanted to remap my ECU to 04 specs, but now it seems like a waste of time and money. What do you think about installing fully adjustable shocks like the Moton or even Ohlins? The GT2 does get kinda of bouncy in the canyons.

How much do the 04 wheels cost? How much lighter are they then the o2/03 boat anchors. Availablity? Any news on the Manthey street mag wheels?

Words of wisdom when considering a wheel upgrade...

Out of interest I did a calculation on the effect of the lightened wheels on the rotational inertia of the wheel/tire combo and it's relative effects on rotational acceleration as part of the overall acceleration for a GT2.

Basically, the 34lbs you saved from the wheels, is equivalent to about 100lbs saved off the weight of the vehicle in terms of the effect on acceleration.

jack and josh found take offs fro around 2K. they are roughly 18# lighter than stock 03; whilst fikse profils are 34# lighter.

has anyone put new shocks/suspension on a GT2? there is a factory "racing" suspension supposedly available

Are you ready to spend $20,000 on your suspension?

I'm still thinking about it for myself.

Yes, GT2's fly well. When the car lets go, it lets go quite suddenly with little you can do about it, much like a race car.

At $20K the bounces become little more than ripples.

This is true, but the shocks require yearly maintenance under hard use and also need to be rebuilt every so often.

I am thinking of doing Ohlins, JRZ, or Moton myself with some other custom tidbits.

I'm interested in lightweight wheels for mine (Magnesium?) if anyone's getting some serious quotes. Problem for me is that it's easier to get here in Europe to avoid import taxes and shipping, but that rules out Fiskes/HREs etc as they don't sell in europe.

I'm looking at the FVD Magnesium BBS wheels, which I think are the old style 3 piece mesh design.

Guy

PS Watt - yes they really should ban children from driving GT2s............ I've had mine do 720 degree rotations, but that was on a wet track whilst attempting to see how much throttle it would take mid-corner (the answer is very little)
