My service writer told me the belt is supposed to be replaced every 20,000 miles and my car is already at 25,000.

It's about a $220 part. I could not find any mention of this in service manual (or perhaps I glanced over it).

Is this normal or is my service writer ripping me off?

 

Generally belts can be found in any size at any NAPA store. Do you happen to know a part number for this? If so, they should be able to cross reference this.

I also just hit 25,000 on a my 55. So If this is true I guess I am due for a replacement as well. Pls keep us updated on any info you find out. Thanks

 

The belt is actually like 130 bucks from NAPA, Mercedes is ripping you off. Just get the dimensions and go buy one yourself.


P.S. If you're replacing it anyway, you might as well get a stage 1 upgrade w/ pulley and belt from Renntech, Kleemann, or Evosport. Get an extra 50hp or so.

 

I had the service performed last week as recommended. The $220 (approximately) included labor, so I guess it wasn't that big of a ripoff.

Still, I have yet to find any literature anywhere stating the belt replacement is mandatory.

 

Yeah but if you think MB dealers rip you off, Renntech & the like charge about 1000% over cost on crap like this.

 

That's 100% true, but at least its worth it in this case since you're picking up 50hp or more. ASP pulley is also very popular and its only like 200 bucks.

 

I pay under $100 for the belt and can change it in about 30 seconds or so. $220 is a rip. I'd do it for free if you were local.

the belt is very easy to replace with a 17mm wrench. It is part of scheduled maint. since it slips easily after it ages.

 

Yeha, popular because its cheap, then people realize that in this case, cheap=crap. Then they buy a VRP, Renntech, or Kleemann.

 

Hey, I work parts at an MB dealer and I'm seeing it listed for $66. $220 might be with labor or something.................the PN I came up with is 011 997 97 92 and the belts demensions should be 21.36X2390.

I don't know about all the pulleys, but we had one come in here with a renntech on it and it might have been improperly installed, but it came loose and shifted the crank inside the housing and destroyed the whole engine.

the engine alone was something like $45K

 

Improperly installed. Ive never seen a properly installed one come loose. Someone probably reused the crank bolt, which is not smart at all.
