New AMG Owner

I just picked up a W211 E55 AMG yesterday, trading in an Evo IX MR. This is my first Mercedes, and the first automatic transmission car I've owned in 20 years (not counting wifey's cars).

After years of raw Japanese sports cars, I wanted something more refined and luxurious. I was still looking for something with strong performance, though. After riding in a friend's SL55 I fell in love with the engine. I really like the understated styling of the W211, thus E55 for me.

So far, I'm digging the torque, engine sound, and the interior. It'll take me some time to get used to the size, and the fact that I can't throw the E55 around like a big gokart.

Here's a pic:

Did you consider a TT or any other cars?

I'm in the same position...and great deals can be had on an E55 now.

What I wanted was something with not only strong performance, but also a soulful sounding engine, good level of refinement, and decent interior. I had a pretty eclectic list of cars to choose from, and did not limit myself to strict body style criteria. The 996 TT was not on that list (out of my budget), but I did consider E46 M3, 02+ 996 Carrera, and 987 Boxster S.
