Maryland speed cameras
Law enforcement at its finest. If the governor signs the bill you guys are screwed.

It's only a matter of time before these things are everywhere, including VA. The revenue is just too tempting to our elected representatives. Soon I won't be able to screw my wife without getting a speeding ticket.
That sucks! I knew they had them out in Scottsdale AZ for a while now, but I was hoping it wouldn't happen in the rest of the country, like it has in the UK. Is there anything we can do to stop this crap?

saw the measure as an essential means of reining in the state's run-away budget deficit. Traffic camera vendors also helped promote the effort with lavish gifts, parties and campaign donations.
More traffic
More accidents
More stress for the voting population
How the **** did this get passed? As someone who has to deal with the absurdity of 495 in Maryland and Virginia every ****ing day, I want to ****ing kill someone right one...livid...absolutely livid...
And moreover, this money should go directly into the pitiful roadways in Maryland...every single ****ing dime...the roads in this area are atrocious and I'm lucky I haven't bent a wheel or destroyed my suspension yet...****...
I told my wife there will come a point where it won't make sense to own the car anymore, or I will need to learn how to track it.
There is a business case out there for a counter measure solution. These things are going to effectively shut down fun driving anywhere and cost everyone a ton of money. Can you imagine speed cameras on 95 and the beltway? Watch for all the new "work zones" that start magically appearing. People will need to put money aside in a monthly budget for the tickets!
Berk - I said that on purpose. A quick play on words

My V1 picks up every single traffic light and speed camera out there so far. They will pick up the people who aren't local, or driving while talking on the phone and doing stupid sh*t. These are the people who won't necessarily know where they are or paying attention. Once you know, you slow up and move on. Everyone does it. Yes, it causes more traffic and jams. The morons slow up lower than the posted limit!!!!
EDIT: May as well bring up the radar detector discussion as well. We can passively 'view' any radio waves in the air. How can there be a law against this in VA & DC?

I read that Chevy Chase Village was planning to switch to Laser based speed cameras. I didn't know those even existed. If others do that it creates a different set of problems - and opportunities.
A couple of things on this...
Page 20 of the Senate version says that the cameras will activate in a work zone only if the speed of the vehicle is going 12 mph over the speed limit. I believe that provision was removed for school zones.
Interestingly, that potentially opens up other defense in officer-cited speeding tickets, because with this law the State is then saying that when it comes to speed cameras, up to 11 mph over the speed limit is considered acceptable and incurs no fine or points. I'm sure someone will try that defense.
Also, it says that someone cited can request in writing, at least 20 days before a trial, that a speed camera operator be present to testify in court. If EVERYBODY so cited made that request, pretty soon they'd be sending so many operators to court they'd think that was not such a good idea.
This does stink, it is about revenue, not safety, and it will be expanded once the $$$ start rolling in. No doubt.
