Weird scratching noise when starting

I just bought a Mini Cooper S 2007 and just recently when i start it i heard a weird scratching noise almost like a CD scratching (yes i checked if there was a cd in the player)

Any ideas?

it only happens on a cold start i noticed

anyone got any clue what so ever? any help is appreciated

Now theres an exclamation point with a triangle around it on my tach any ideas what that is?

that would be your traction control...there should be a switch say ASC or DSC...you must have accidently turn it on...did it on mine all the time when I lower the window.

I had our '06 S in the shop for a routine oil change and a new battery (still had the OEM battery - talk about running on borrowed time ), and they had another '06 in there for an unidentifiable noise like this.

It turned out that the crank pulley was separating, causing the noise. The pulley cannot just be pulled from the crank like any other car, there are six special, mini-only tools that a shop has to have to fix this. That other '06 ended up on a flatbed and went to the dealership. God help him.

I hope this is not your problem.
