Daily driving a GTR.....Reality vs wishful thinking
Daily driving a GTR.....Reality vs wishful thinking
Driving a b8 s4 daily right now and still looking for something different for a daily. I know that there are a weath of opinions here, but is stop/go, errand running, and short distance driving frequently any worse for a gtr than, say, a 997 c4s?
I can handle the rough-ish ride, transmission, and sounds. I think it's part of the car's character that entices me. But I don't want to put dd miles on a car that will make me pay for it in terms of maintenance.
Also, unsure if it's different elsewhere in the country, but it seems that gtrs still have that Lindsay Lohan effect and attracts too much attention. If using for driving around clients and what not, for those who have done this, any regrets?

I have been daily driving my GT-R for almost a year with no problems. Maintenance is not too bad, especially if you don't track it. The 18k service is decently expensive (I think around 2,000 to change out transmission fluid, etc). My GT-R only has 8k on it so I haven't spent hardly anything on maintenance yet.
As far as the "Lindsay Lohan" effect... it is true. The car gets incredible amounts of attention. It can get annoying for sure.

I came from B7 S4 myself and have been very happy with my purchase. While the GTR is a little rough as a daily, it makes up for it in so many ways !! The attention has died down for the most part and its almost always a positive experience. The maintenance schedule should cover everything you need (no extras) so just plan for the big one at 18k. I was at the same cross roads and would suggest you drive the Nissan before your purchase... Game Over...(turbo maybe C4s not even close)
good luck

My service was $1600 for everything including tax.
My most recent service is $900 (I purchased the fluids online ~$650 - and paid a local shop $230 to change them all out).
My car still gets attention. It depends on where you live, and where you go. I rarely go anywhere without some comment, thumbs up, etc... Still, everyday - and I've had it for three years. It gets old, but it's a great car, so I expect it.
*edit: I don't see any reason to not use the car for daily errands. I think you'll find that trunk pretty useful for actually holding stuff. I take it everywhere. Stop and go, frequent stops, etc... I don't see it being worse than any other vehicle.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I've driven both but probably will have to back to back once I can find an available GTR in my area. Will probably stick to a C4S vs GTR comparison only because the prices are comparable (997.2 w/ PDK). Car needs to be drivable by my wife, so thus the dual-clutch transmission.
I too was surprised by the size of the trunk. And while the cabin and seats are small-ish, it's still better than I expected.
I can tolerate a little attention, I just don't want a lot of people trying to race me or stuff like that.

Here's my 2 cents. I bought a lightly used 09 GTR a few weeks ago and use it as a daily driver. It is a little rough but not as bad as my JCW Mini was. You can put suspension on comfort and it's fine. You will definitely get lots of attention depending on where you live. I live in a small southern town and it's the only one in the area, so lots of young fan boy head whipping. No punks in dropped civics have tried to race me...yet.
It is an absolutely blast to drive so the positives far outweigh negatives but maintenance costs have to be considered.

I've been driving my GTR daily for the past 6 months, and its been great to me. I take it to the groceries, and can fit my weeks shopping in the trunk and then some. the only thing that bothered me when I first got it was the attention it was getting, some positive, and some negative. But i got used to it after a while
The whole reason I bought mine was with the intent to daily drive it. My goal was to have the GTR as the daily, and the Viper as the fast car. I still have my 335i and I'm not really pushing the sale so I still DD that the most, but I can't wait to DD the GT-R full time. It's such a fun car and makes the commute so much more. I wouldn't have any regrets. It gets way less attention than the Viper does so that's fine with me.
My GTR is one of my daily driver, I don't have much problem with it being daily driven. after all its automatic and still very comfy imo
I just don't like driving it in the city too much, its too thirsty!

15,000 miles is awesome. I only saw about 7-8000 miles before I changed mine (including an HPDE or two per set). 4 sets later, I'm going with the bullet proof all-seasons... Tired of paying for rubber. I may just track those as well (don't really care about 2-3 secs per lap, if I can do 5 times as many laps on them).
I use it as my daily driver. Then again my commute is only 2 miles each way. Which is highly boring in the GTR. Never get to open it up! Wish I got more highway driving.:| My 350Z was more fun in the city, but GTR is more fun when I get to open it up.
Possibly or he should get the Dunlop all seasons. They have a longer treadware. Heard they last 30k or so on normal driving. Although you give up some performance on the track.
