Shopping for a GTR - what to look for?

So, decided I'd start to look for one. From what I've read, the model improvements just keep coming. Interesting that it hasn't resulted in crashing prices for even '09 models though. Anyway, I think a '12 would probably be a good choice. Besides usual used car stuff, like brakes, tires, painted panels, carfax report, what particular things should be inspected on a GTR? Overrevs, obviously not an issue. The cars seems very stout, but what are the real problems?

CPO seems to be unavailable for these cars. I think the bumper to bumper is only 3 years, but the powertrain warranty is 5- with that you hardly need a CPO. I only look for the disaster protection and if that is in place for 5 years, I consider myself golden.

I notice that people seem to own these cars for about 10 minutes. There are even used 13's on the market. Some people might tell me that they get hooked and simply look to get the improvements of the next model year. Others might think you get the car and after six months, you are either bored with it or hate it. Which is it? It doesn't seem like another exotic that people just buy to look at and then sell after six months.

Oh, I want to use it as a DD. So I'm not as interested in building it to 900 hp. Would probably only do cosmetic mods and exhaust.

Thanks for the advice!

Try to find your answers on Nagtroc.org
I bought a 09 with the extended Nissan Gold preferred warranty that extends it for another 5 years on top of the factory warranty.
Best of luck

Yep... NAGTROC will have everything you need. I'd find one with a Cobb and simple tune/ exhaust. Totally different car with just a few bolt ons. You will get for same price as stock car without, or very close.

No doubt NAGTROC is the place for all things GT-R.

If you can swing it.. '12 or '13. The changes in these cars are very noticeable from the years prior.

Even more so... buy one from a board member there. Great community with enthusiasts who care about their cars.

In regards to those who own these cars for 6 months and get rid of them is simply because I believe those individuals go through cars like most change underwear. Not a bad thing just saying.

I wouldn't get rid of mine for the world. It's been a great car and it does get driven daily... even @ 750whp

Good luck and let me know if I can help you out in any way!

r-35

make sure you take car to dealer so computer download
to check tune up status and no launch control use.
Have dealer also pull service record to be sure all work has been done . A 5 year power train warr. is worthless without the paper trail.

Did a deal on 12! Car is a year old and just had an oil change, but not the POS. it was delivered in Oct. taking it in for the POS now is no big deal right?

Found a super silver black edition with 5k miles. Dealer claimed the car had never been launched of course. I guess if I take it to a Nissan dealer and it's been launched a dozen times, I have grounds to simply return the car. Anyway, doubt that will happen and nevertheless I think there are limited things you can do to the car in that many miles. Still on original tires and the car has definitely not been tracked. I'm psyched to get the car!

You will have no issues with car. Have dealer put in writing car's computer has been downloaded and never launched.Follow the maintenance guide . Also, change oil every 3000 miles . The POS is free so do it asap.
I have a 2009 with 11,000 miles that I got 2 years ago, and drive it only 4000 per year. I have a 7 year warranty so mine is still stock. I will only flash the ecu and add a high flow y pipe later.
good luck

Enjoy the car - I had the same car, color is great.

Don't worry about launches too much, the 12's are greatly improved and also have a protection built in so that you can only launch the car a certain number of times within a time frame.

Cobb, Mid-Pipe, Down-Pipe, Intake, and exhaust and you will have a VERY driveable DD that will outrun most things on the street.

Yes, POS is no big dea - complimentary at 1000 miles, 1yr/12k, 2yr/24k, 3yr/36k miles.

You can also have the tech adjust the camber settings - I recommend street, to prolong tire life.

You can have the touch points adjusted as well (how much creep you want built in, etc...).

The thing with launches, as we've discussed - as a '12, it can only be done in VDC-R, so traction is never in VDC-off during launch, so this issue of launches can be either interpreted or dismissed. Because VDC launches are not a warranty issue, they are not recorded the same as in the past. The older ones - as it appears gtr guy in az has - were concerned with VDC-off events (LC1/2 and possible LC3). But being as you have LC4, this is a favorite among a lot of GT-R guys, and cannot be simply reprogrammed by the dealer (you can switch with a Cobb AP w/TCM (NIS-006), but then warranties n' stuff...).

Awesome, thanks you guys! Hoping to get it in my hands this week. Really wanted a super silver BE; was very lucky to find one local. Haven't been looking that long - think I was just lucky. Thanks to you guys, I started looking and found them really appealing. Car even has the backup camera too! I think one of the interesting things about these cars is that many exotic dealers get them in trade and don't know how to price the options. Anyway, I'll have many more questions - think in advance for the help.
I look at it as a plus that the POS has NOT been done. I can have it done myself and be sure to have the alignment set to street instead of track, etc.

Not really any options. They all come the same way - loaded as standard equipment. Seriously, and literally.

Floor mats, chrome jack, or a bag. That's about it. They come with the GT-R mats anyway, but you can pay extra for the CF insert rugs. Tires and wheel colors are no cost. No other added features to nickel and dime an additional $40k. Makes resale EXTREMELY easy. Just as what you are experiencing at this very moment.

I think they changed that for the newer ones. I think the backup camera was a $600 option in 2012.

It may have been. Standard on '13.

Just like the iPod adapter was a ~$300 option for '09-10's. Everybody got it anyway. That is the cool part about the GT-R, they are all practically the same. No need to shop around for which options on which trans, on which color... Just choose color and go.
