Designing my Garages
Designing my Garages
Hey guys,
I have been throwing around preliminary ideas for my garage addition for a while now. And, even though I am not sure if I will stay in my house, I think its time to build my dream garages. I will be designing for the next few weeks, working out all the details and specific "perks" it will have. So, here is your chance to weigh in and help from the start. If you have never seen something like this go from paper to finished product, its a pretty cool experience.
Here is what I have so far in the way of want list.....mind you there will be a full space above for bedrooms and a large family room....but who is concerned about that space.
1 - 3 bay garage. (extra wide)
2 - Celinigs 11' tall with two lifts for additional car storage.
3 - a mix of fluorescent and incandescent lighting, depending on what you are using the space for, cleaning cars or hanging out.
4 - Size will be 12 feet deeper than a standard garage, so there will be tons of extra space for seating, tools, refrig, TV, etc.
5 - Tile floor
6 - All walls and ceiling to be drywall.
7 - The far left bay will have a curtain system (think hospital room) to cut it off from the rest of the garage for washing cars and detailing, with a drain.
8 - Heat and air.
9 - entry way into the theater that you guys saw....where the beer fridge is currently.
10 - One double door for daily car use, and a single 9' wide door for the toy and one lift.
I think thats most of it. I started drawing it all today, so I am getting pretty excited.
I would love some thoughts and feedback, as well as I would be glad to show any of you guys plans.

make sure in the bay w/ the curtain you ad a filtered hot/cold spicket, area for pool table
, may want to consider gas/electric heat lamps in the wash bay as well, even though you will have heat this could come in handy in the winter if it's super cold out and you want to detail the car, that added directional heat is sooo nice
I'll think of more later

Kevin...
Your project sounds awesome. I would recommend extra flourseant lighting in the bay designated for detailing and tons of extra electrical outlets to operate your polishers, buffers, vacs, etc. If you can work a way to have some additional light on the sides of the car to pick up defects in the finish you would well be on your way to heaven.
Don't forget storage space for all of your detailing supplies...Oh yea..and the hot tub

The lighting in there is going to be insane. I have that covered as well as tons of outlets. There is going to be almost 18 feet in front of the porsche, so tons of room for hanging out. Pool table will be right upstairs in the family room. But there will be a sofa and TV in there. I will definitely do the large wall mounted heaters for detailing in the winter!
Do you plan to add a central air vac? So cleaning the interior will be easy.
Also, I dont know if you could do this, but instead of using a leaf blower, can you add the drying units professional car washes have inside the bay for when you detail or even wash.

This sounds killer.
I have never been a fan of tile flooring in a garage. I really like the look and feel of stained concert. When I was in AZ, I toured a house that had oxen blood stained concert floors. It was bad ***. I do not have a picture of this, but it is close to what is below.
Picture is of a polished concert driveway.

Watch out though, you don't want that in the wash bay, any drop of water on polished concrete and it becomes as slippery as ice...it's really not good when water is on it, other than that I would do it in a heartbeat to the other areas of the garage!
I have use it before where they add a sand based product to give it some grip. I will start having some of my concrete subs look into it.
I will be drawing tonight, since I am getting all this feedback!

Holy crap Kev this is awesome!
I think you have it pretty much covered from what i can see. I would say that some type of thicker/insulated garage doors would be ideal as a "regular" grarage door will let air through like no other. Maybe those wooden lookin ones? Or something along those lines. They alos look WAY better too!
Ill keep thinking....but be sure to make plenty of room upstairs for me to crash there. ITs a long ride back to BumbleF*ck from your pile of bricks

Kevin,
Sounds awesome. Some thoughts:
(1) If it's not prohibitive, you might want to have one stall climate controlled and air filtered. That's where the Lambo goes when it goes into storage.
(2) Fire system might not be a bad idea, but possibly expense. Then again, expense might be offset somewhat by savings on homeowner's insurance. Talk with Jon. (I get a discount for the system at my place.)
(3) Thought about using solar power? Cut back a few trees and you might be able to use panels for electric and skylights for natural lighting during the day. Depends if you plan on sticking around long term.
(4) Remote monitoring via Internet. Keeps an eye on the baby sitter not to mention your cute little girls as they grow up. I'll tell you about the time I ended up in the back of a police car for driving underage. Very easy to do.
(5) Extra bays for my cars. Ohhh, is that selfish?
(6) Radiant heat. Always dig that.
(7) Assume that an alarm hook-up is a given?
Keep us posted!! Fuuuuuuuun project.

I think you should cut a hole under the toy garage lift (that the car on the ground can be lowered into) so you can get the car on top out without having to start the car on the "ground", pull it out, put it in the driveway somewhere, get the other car off the lift, put that somewhere in the driveway, then take the first car back in.
Word.

Sounds Great. Not too sure how much wrenching you plan on doing, but you mentioned two lifts. I would def do one two-post and one four post. 220 outlets for the big guns.
Stripper pole ftw!
Stripper pole ftw!
I love all the comments and thoughts. We are on all electric out here, and thus I get a really great discount on all my power, so solar is not a need. The entire garage space will be fully climate controlled and yes there will be insulated garage doors, probably not wooden ones, though (budget). Mythoughts on the space above are for a family room with pool table, sitting area and bar, as well as a master bedroom suite. This way, that upper floor bedroom will become a guest suite (Jon).
Stipper Pole will be a DEFINITE addition in the garage.....that is an awesome idea James. It may have been said as a joke, but its something that will definitely go in!

Not too much wrenching, as the lifts will mostly be for extra storage, cleaning and light wrenching.
