996 clutch slipping
hi guys,
todd just called and told me that his clutch is slipping in the 996. he has 40K on the car and we've owned it since May.
can you recommend a good place to have this looked at/fixed? park place has quoted $2200 with fly wheel replacement. They also offer PCA discount of 10%.
thanks much,
jody

In Seattle, there are a couple of places.
Gerber in Magnolia, literally right down the street from Mirrorworks.
The one in Greenwood, on Greenwood Ave & like 76th.
Eastside, I'll call Redmond Euro. They are my go-to guys, & they offer a PCA & ACA discount. 425-376-2655

perfect time to upgrade to a lightweight flywheel by the way...
I would not go to park place... just my opinion based on all of the bad stuff I have heard about that place...

pj....what exactly does the lightweight flywheel do? i'm unfamiliar with flywheels. i've only heard of them, but never actually learned about them.
sounds like barrier and PP are out based on personal experiences. i'll call Mark at Gerber and Monty at Redmond Europ. and see who can get us in the soonest.
thanks again for the suggestions, guys. this is the first time i've had to take either one of our cars in for anything other than an oil change and tires.

Do people really go to PP for service?
Yea, get the LTW FW, it really helps the engine rev & feels more powerful.

Flywheel
press go pedal and your engine turns a flywheel -- the heavier the flywheel the more time it takes to spin
Stock 996 GT3 flywheel weighs like 35 lbs and is a dual mass flywheel (quiet, no chatter)
LWFW for 996 GT3 is like 10 or 12 lbs and is a single mass flywheel... meaning parked, in neutral, you can hear a little chatter
So imagine holding a 35 pound weight in one hand and a 10 pound weight in the other... now I ask you to lift them... you can lift the 10 pound weight much quicker...
Same is true of a flywheel... your/Todd's engine can turn a 10# flywheel much quicker than a 35# flywheel... so when you/Todd put your foot on the go pedal the engine will hit redline quicker and when you downshift and let out the clutch you will have less engine braking...becasue the fly wheel is easier to spin/lighter...
does this make sense?

ah-ha, i totally understand. thanks pj! i hear to replace the regular flywheel, it's about $800 to $1000. does that sound accurate?
they said $1700 to replace clutch and if a new flywheel is needed, then it's $2700. so, if i wanted to upgrade, just tell them that i want the lightweight one, right?
sorry for all the ?'s. but, at least i'll be well educated after this!
i had a VW Beetle before my p-car! hahaahah!

FWIW, the RS LTW FW & clutch for my 993 is $1600 for the parts. I would not spend $1000 on a stock FW, that's just throwing away money that can be put into making the car faster.

mike,
that price includes the labor as well. but, you guys are right, if they are already in there and they say it needs to be replaced, i might as well upgrade it to the LWFW.
