The Wife has a conference in Midtown NYC, & I get to tag along. This is also the weekend of my Dad's 60th B-day in Boston, so we are taking a train from NYC to Boston on Saturday for the party.

It's been a long time since I was last in NYC, I wasn't even legal to drink. This is Sarah's first time. We are planning on a Broadway show, & some good pastrami sandwiches. But other then that we really don't know. Midtown kind of sucks for tourist things.

 

Empire state building is midtown. Rockefeller Plaza is midtown. Museum row is not far from midtown.

For that matter, everything is just a subway or cab ride away from midtown.

I love NYC. Would go 2 times a year if time permitted. We like shows on Broadway, Shopping and Food. I don't do the tourist stuff anymore.

I've seen every big show on broadway and like every type of show there. I recommend for shear entertainment value mamma mia over all there now. If you don't like Abba don't go.

Shopping we do at least 2 full days evertime we go. New shops and new designs NYC is perfect for.

Food....I stay away from the famous spots as much as possible. Over the years I've determined most are crazy over rated. Most of them are only around because of the first timer going because they heard of it imho. I recommend La Mia in Little Italy, no menu's just a nice meal prepared. On any given night it could be slammed. I also as much as I hate to admit liked a Bobby Flay place called Mesa Grill. It's a long ways from where you are staying the Taxi ride down and back was more than the meal but it was spectacular if you like Southwestern. http://www.mesagrill.com/newyorkcity/


We tend to wander the streets and pick places based on looks and how busy they are. In NYC that says it all. If people are standing outside waiting there is a reason. Choosing a new spot everytime we are there is 90% of the fun of the place. Make sure you are dressed well for outdoors and the 40 minute wait on the street might be the best time you've spent all year.

We also won't eat in the theater district anymore. I've had 1 good meal in years there. The places go out as fast as they open and I don't think one has lasted more than a year down there. Just not worth it to try to find a place to eat down there.

Don't limit yourself to midtown with the Green Train running north to south you can hop it and be a different spot in minutes. I like grabbing cabs more now just because it's so much faster it's just a lot more $$$

We are going to do a show, there is a new one staring Scarlet Johansen. Of course we have a couple of lunch spots picked out. Bad part we got 2 days, & Sarah is going to be working, as she is a speaker at the conference. The first night dinner is taken with work/contacts.

So far the plan is to eat a hot dog @ one of the carts, & I must have a good sandwich from a Jewish deli. We are going to see times square, last time I was there it was mostly **** related stuff, & of course going to Rockefeller plaza. The Met is open late on Friday so that is also a option.

It sucks that it's such a sort trip, we will have fun in Boston. I know most of the good spots there.

 

i recommend the black market. lol! you can find yourself a nice "Bolex" and a "Tommy Hilbinger" handbag! =)

 

Katz's Deli for pastrami and potato latke's!

 

and a bowl of pickles and olives the size of a Large Popcorn at the Movie theater. Nothing like 2lbs of Pastrami inside a sandwich

I like Carmine's in Times Square and I didn't think it was that expensive.

 

Timely thread. I am heading there next week as well. PM me your contact info. I don't know what day I am going yet, waiting for my client to set the date. I will be staying at the Sheridan New York and Towers in Midtown. If we get lucky maybe we can grab lunch and wonder a bit while your wife is working.

Just got back, it was a busy trip. just about 2ft of snow fell on us. We did all the normal stuff, Times SQ, Chrysler bldg, Empire State, Grand Central, Rockefeller, shopping on Madison Ave. Ate dinner on Fri night @ Kats, WOW, it was awesome! But it was over $50 for sandwiches. It was the best pastrami I've ever had. We also did the "best" pizza place, & it was good, but I like pizza in Boston better.

Headed over to the WTC, it is being rebuilt, & the area looks good. It's hard to imagine the size with out being there, the entire block is fenced off so you can't really see what's going on inside. We also wanted to see the Statue of Liberty, but it was just to far to walk with the weather. It's about 6 blocks from WTC.

Tried to do a show, stood in line for almost an hour in Times sq, it was sleet & snow mix, I was soaked through, & just left. They also didn't have any tickets for any show I was interested in, mostly musicals. Something to do later.

It was so wet & nasty, the subway was leaking all over the place, you had to be carful where you walked.

Took the train to Boston on Saturday, it was really nice. very quiet & comfortable. Took far less then a plane, most were 3-6hrs behind or canceled on Saturday. Of course Boston was AWESOME, we had great food, brought home some awesome pastries from Mike's, my Dad was totally surprised by Sarah & I being @ his 60th B-day. It was a world wind trip but worth it.
