Quote: I'm not shooting RAW, the files are a bit big. For special things, I'm going to start. Also I only have Photoshop CS2, so the Camera RAW is not for my camera.
I always shoot RAW. There's just so much room for working with a RAW file over a JPEG. Memory is cheap and if you're concerned about file size, just shoot in sRAW.

Quote: I do use the center focus, for some reason almost all my shots are soft, no matter what the lens.

Next time I see you it would be nice to see what you think of my camera, I'm thinking there might be something wrong with it. Not only are shots super soft, my AF has a super hard time with black, & silver, it will say it's focused, but it's not. This is with a very, nice L lens. Also the colors are not as vivid & true as my old Canon. But I also just updated the firmware, & am hoping that fixes it.

What aperture are you shooting in? The lower the aperture, the shallower depth of field and can make them soft in certain parts of the photo.
Color is another reason I always shoot in RAW. I don't want the camera compressing the color. I use Lightroom to import the photos and convert them to JPEG using the color profile of my choice. This is important when shooting a car like Tommy's which is really unique and tough to capture.

Black cars are hard no matter what. If you're using the center focus point, focus on a wheel or headlight or something that's easier to pick up. Up the aperture to give you a bit more depth.

Quote: Should I leave "highlight tone priority" on all the time?

Panning shots are difficult no matter what and takes a lot of practice. Some of these are pretty good. Just practice more. I leave highlight tone priority on all the time, but I'm shooting white wedding dresses about 80% of the time. You also loose your low and 100 ISO and the highest ISO settings when you turn HTP on.

I'll be out at RTC this weekend and next if you want to chat more. I'd be glad to look at your camera as well.

Well, I should have said, I don't shoot RAW all the time due to my computer, it's a bit old, & working with a 28mb RAW files is not so pleasant. It's not the space, but the workspace. With my old camera, I did use RAW all the time. I do have a 2TB NAS that has most of my older stuff on it, storage is good. We're working on getting me a new laptop, but Apple is very proud of them, & the one I want is almost $4k. I can get a couple of very nice L lens for that price!

The still shots were taken with a 50mm 1.4 prime lens, they were shot in AV @ 1.4.

The panning shots were taken with a 70-200 F4 L around 30-50 shutter, & AV of 4-16. They are also taken handheld. I would say almost 1/3 of what I shoot this way is out of focus, I know some of that is me, but some of it is the camera as well.

I would like to learn how to set up custom WB, how to get sharper pics. Do you like Lightroom over Photoshop? I really want to take the photo right, & not really have to do a lot of post processing.

Mike,
Here are the 5 that I took with your lens today. The first 3 are at 2.8 and the last 2 are at 1.8. They look fine to me. I think it's either something with your camera, or something on your PC. Next time we meet, I'll take my lens and shoot with your camera and see. I have an 85 1.8 I can bring to test with.

These are at 2.8

These are at 1.8

James, they all look fine, do you still have one that hasn't been processed?

I did have a problem with my computer, this morning it refused to let me download pics from my camera, & my mouse wasn't working. It was not a virus, but some corrupted file, I ran a full battery of test, & it's working better then before.

My pics will be posted in a few hours.

I have the raw files still if that's what you're asking.
Do you plug the camera into the PC and work on them that way? If so, try pulling the card and putting it in a card reader and importing them that way.
