I'm buying a 94 Supra, this afternoon. It has a 5 speed which leads me to believe that it was originally an NA. does the drive train differ between NA and Turbo models?

 

Yes. If it is a 5 speed it was originally NA for sure. If it is the factory 5 speed it would be the W58 transmission, however it is common for NA Auto owners to do a TT motor swap and go with the R154 transmission which is much stronger than the W58.

Do you have more information on the car?

 

if it clean , dont care just go for it and load 6speed on it later

 

Hope you have a big chunk of cash if you decide to swap, very expensive conversion.

 

the original 6spd getrag is very expensive (and also a very strong piece!) ive seen around $4000 for it. it accounts for a large part of the cars long term value. if you got a car that was originally NA, make sure you are not paying the full turbo car price.

the w58 that came in the n/a is fairly weak, a friend of mine destroyed his with only about 375-400hp on street tires.

if you got an r154, they can handle a moderate amount of power, and are relatively cheap to replace, around $1k give or take a bit.

 

Ya it's a strong car, it has a large single turbo with bov and 370 hp. I paid 19700 cad, full body kit, intercooler. Is it turbo lag when it struggles at low rom or tuning problems, it has obd1 and a progamable ecu, came with software. The guy was 50k into it picked it up in BC driving it back to AB tomorrow. It is famous being featured in the cut scenes of Need for Speed Carbon the previous owner worked for EA

 

If its only 370HP then you have a NA-T car, essentially the previous owner just slapped a turbo on an NA car.

My original TT is 370hp, if not more, with just FMIC, downpipe, exhaust and FCD.

Got a 94 na single turbo. Where is somewhere better than eBay to find a six speed and cord to plug into my laptop? Does anyone have some insight into tuning? it has issues in 12 and 5 th gear like the ecu doesn't know what to do, could be the turbo controller is made for a six speed?

 

Google SupraForums, join, search all questions you have asked, find answers, search again, confirm answers, then ask questions to the members. Repeat all steps if necessary

 

Why don't you check if it has 4 piston or two piston front brakes? The turbo has 4 pistons up front and two rear. The NA has Two front and one piston rear if you want to confirm for sure that it's was an original NA car. You may want to check the forums for the engine difference and etc. If you get it post some pics .

Not so if you have a JDM car. JDM TTs come with USDM NA brake setups...

To the OP. There are many differences between the NA and the TT. You need to do some legwork before jumping into the Supra world.

To the poster that mentioned just swapping the transmissions. All I have to say is LOL. The Getrag trannies are going for 5500 dealer cost right now. There are only 12 in the US at this time. That has been confirmed with Curt over at Elmhurts Toyota. He is a big time supplier of parts on Supraforums.

Goodluck with whatever you decide. My only advice would be not to rush into things.
