6 Week Old Panamera going to Body Shop
I went to city hall the following day and the protruding metal rod had been repaired already! The system works. They were very receptive and asked me to submit 2 estimates. The first was $479 since the only paint work needed was under the bumper and all parts were still present and not broken except for minor snap connectors. The other "Porsche Certified" and dealer recommended shop wanted $1350. I wonder which the city would want me to use. The cheaper shop said they just did a Panamera bumper last week with almost identical damage. It's essentially-remove bumper, heat and repaint the damaged area underneath, and remount. Should take 1 1/2 days. I am happy they won't repaint the visible bumper.
Regarding the poster who said I need to take responsibility for my own actions, you wouldn't ask the city to pay if it was your car? Really? This was a total setup for a problem likme this and was do to faulty installation. If they refuse to pay, I'm forced to pay since the repair is less than my deductible.

I don't have the air suspension. Didn't want it after last debacle with Mercedes when car was sitting on tires while parked in my garage.

I'm glad everything seems to be working out for you on this one.

Glad its working out for you and you don't need to spray the bumper. Post pics when it's fixed.
I guess my reaction would have been "I can't believe I just ripped off my f***ing bumper. You idiot, how did you not see that?" not, "I can't believe the lot owner doesn't go around inspecting their concrete barriers on a daily basis to make sure my Porsche doesn't get damaged - who owns this lot? I'm not paying for this." To me, this is no different than hitting a pothole and bending a wheel or scraping your nose on a steep grade lot entrance - both avoidable accidents for which I would take responsibility.
That is why the City is paying without a fight! They know better and you don't!
Sorry to see that, but honestly it's your fault. I never pull up to a curb like that and put my nose over it in a low nose car. Yes, that rebar should have been all the way in the curb, but you pulled too far forward.
Good luck with city hall and/or getting a cheap fix.

I think at the very least your accident will make a lot of us more careful. A piece of rebar like that would be really easy to miss (if you're not specifically looking for it) and I bet the same thing would happen to 99% of people driving the same car. Glad they're paying for it; I'm sure it'll be good as new in no time.

The idea of the city being at fault was not my first instinct, but after sitting on the curb surveying the damage, and then thinking how it was relatively unavoidable except by not pulling into the spot fully, I thought I'd ask the police officer nearby his opinion. He said he'd take the report and told me who to speak to the following day. He didn't have a problem with it. He was pretty sympathetic actually.
If the city officials felt otherwise, I'm sure they wouldn't have reimbursed me without the slightest resistence. If they offer and maintain their city hall/police station parking lot for their constituents, they also have to enure its safety.
i am very surprised to hear that they are paying for it. so if you curb your wheel, lip, or anything due to any protruding objects, the owner of the parking lot is responsible for it? i am not sure if this applies only for only government owned properties or personal properties as well (shopping mall, etc). i've only had this kind of issue once and it was very minor. at the time, i wasn't sure if it was my fault or the whomever owned that lot.
whom did you talk to in city hall? just curious.
