Which of the two as a daily driver?

Asking this in a Panamera forum might not make sense but I am not sure where else I can address my question at so here it goes:

Would you choose a P4S/PS or a X6M to be your daily driver? Both cars are controversially styled, both with 'cramped' rear seats that can only accommodate two and both are within the same budget range.

My personal take on this:

One has the porsche badge while the other sports the M logo so I'd assume prestige wise, these two pretty much cancel one another out.

Exterior styling, I'd probably say a tie as well. Great looking from the front but the rear leaves much to be desired.

Judging both by their interior can be tricky. With full merino leather, X6M looks classier than the Porsche but if you go crazy (read: expensive) with the options on the Panamera, the scale tips over to the latter.

So I guess that leaves us with performance. In my opinion, the X6M is much faster than the S or 4S but handling wise, I'd probably go with the Porsche.

So whats your take on all this? I am debating on which of the two I should get to haul myself on a daily basis but I am having a hard time deciding.

as u said, X6M is slightly better in straight line speed, while the 4S is bossing the handling department.
buy what puts a bigger grin on your face (during a test drive).

truck vs car - your personal preference.

I have had a lot of cars and the panamera is certainly way more fun than anything I have ever owned prior. You get lots more looks in the panamera too. The X6 is invisible - common

catchmyshadow - thank you for sharing those numbers. the x6m sure does feel like a brick at times but i am not planning to track either of the car if i purchase one or the other. instead, i am thinking about getting a 1 series M for track purposes. bigger smile? neither to be honest, haha. coming from m6's N/A v10, neither of these two thrill me with their quiet turbo engines.

dhh - your observations are probably contrary to my. i am from socal and panameras are a dime a dozen here. rather, the m seems to be more of a head turner....

Panamera would be my choice. Looks better than the BMW and performs good enough to have a good time as a daily driver.

my vote goes to x6m because you seem to be more concerned about stop and go rather than handling, which you hardly notice in daily commute (daily driving).

i am not a fan of any x6. i'd definitely opt for x5m instead of x6m but that's just me.

between x6m vs p4s, x6m gets my vote.

I don't want to sound like negative voice, but I am also in So Cal and I don't see the X6M as a head turner at all.. Not even close. In my world, most of the head turning is folks wondering what BMW was thinking with this body style......

I know that there are still those who have similar feelings about the Panamera, but it is no contest in my mind.

Its kinda tough to ask folks on a Panamera forum about this comparo and get the BMW as the choice here...

Interesting topic - I am in the same boat. Yesterday I test drove a Panamara 4S, Panamara Turbo (twice), Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, X5 M (twice) and Alpina B7 (short wheel base) - (twice).

My impression was the Alpina B7 is a fast luxury car, but too big for my taste. The 4S would not hold my interest. The Panamara TT was awesome. The Cayenne TT was very nice, but not worth the $40K premium to the X5M. The X5M offers a lot of value.

I have daily driven an M5 since 1988, currently a 2006. I have had a second car, Porsche, which currently is a 2009 997 TT Cab.

My 2006 M5 is at the point where if I don't sell it, it will have no value at all. Not sure I want to wait until next August to replace it when the new M5 comes out.

So here are my final three options I am considering - your comments would be appreciated.

Do I get a Panamera Turbo, sell the M5 and the 997 TT Cab?
Do I trade in M5, get X5M and keep 997 TT Cab?
Do I wait for next M5 in August 2012, keep TT Cab?

Getting Panamera TT and keeping the Turbo is not an option - PTT is just too much money to justify keeping it and the 997 TT Cab. Built to my specs it is about $167,000.

Thx

I have 2 kids who are way into baseball and hockey, so I need some trunk space for my daily driver.

I love the Panamera TT it is an awesome car, but it may be more than I need daily and not be as flexible as the X5M?

Thx in advance.

i said "its more of a head turner compared to the panamera" stress should be placed on the word 'more' instead of 'head turner'...hehe. i am not saying the x6 m is a crowd magnet but no one bothers to take a glance at the panamera as far as i am concerned. its a respected car, like the s550 but would you look at the mercedes? on the other hand, the m badge and the deeper exhaust note of the bmw might get a glance or two but you are correct to say its not much of a head turner either.

supercup - since you already have a TT, why go for the panamera? i don't really think you need that much power for a daily commute....3 second 0-60 seems a little excessive for something you are planning to drive from your home to your work place. i'd probably keep the cab and get the x5m. something for the weekdays and something for weekends....

the f10 m5 might be nice but i think the wait will kill me....

I have found that everyone has different criteria about what they are looking for in a car. My choice of a Panamera was based on how it drove and felt to me... I also found the interior to be the perfect fit and layout for my tall frame, while the car feels like a driving machine at the same time. I am not as focused on attracting attention, and sometimes I actually wish that my car was a bit more stealth-like since I use it as a daily driver in my business and I do not like looking like a fat cat to my clientele.

BTW, I love the M5 and have spent time behind the wheel of an M6, both obviously the last generation....They are fabulous driving machines and the newest versions will be world beaters in many areas... But I still can't fathom owning the X6M

If we are talking P4 vs X6M, its a tight speed match, the X6M gets slower with speed, its a big block. The real question should be Cayenne vs X6 vs ML63 AMG if you are really looking at SUV's- The Panamera feels like a sportscar and looks like one. The X6M is a big suv and feels like it, although they have made it very stiff to handle like a normal car, but it cant hide its size. I like the looks of the X6M, but Panny more.

Reasons that would decide it for me: BOth have 4 seats, but the X6 has a way bigger boot. Do you need it? The Panamera is a sporstscar, the X6 a SUV, which one do you want. For a familycar to keep my kids safe on a journey to the summer cottage with a lot of sace needed, Id take a X6. For the family trip to go shopping or visit friends with one trolly and a few bags, Id take the Panny.

My family has a SUV and a PTT, it used to be 997tt and suv, but then the 997 just was parked in the garage, I like to take my family for the ride. THe X6M is something in between a sportscar and a SUV.

If you really thinka at what you need, the answer will be clear to you.
Do you need a big boot? The Panny boot is bigger than a 997tt, but not saloon car big, you cant load it all the way to the top, and the back porion is really low. Do you want a heavy high car that protects your kids against moose and other animals or do you ride mainly in the city and suburbs?

Good luck on whatever desicion you make.

Vs M5? DO you need AWD? I think you will know what you need, all of these are very different once you think about it.

I almost bought an X5M. Only drawback was the gas mileage sucks. I owned an M6 that would only get about 15MPG, small gas tank and I was filling up every few days. I really like the X6, but the Pan would get my vote. Good luck with whichever vehicle you get!

I drove a x6m at bmw's m driving school and own a p4s. In terms of handling, p4s wins, X6M's body roll is more apparent than p4s. Acceleration feel frankly i would have to say p4s wins also, the numbers might say otherwise, but I was not blown away by the x6m's acceleration ' feel ' P4s with PDK feels quicker, perhaps because its lower to the ground. Practically wise, x6m might be better as it sits taller. Also i would bet the reliability is better with the P4S.

Pun, if you’re seriously considering these two vehicles as competitors then I doubt very much you’ll find here a consensus agreeable with your opinions. These vehicles drive very differently and the Panamera is much more enjoyable. If you’re mostly concerned with the vehicle’s appearance take any attractive woman by to see each car and gauge their reactions. The Panamera will win – every time.

Supercup, as an M5 owner and a 911 Turbo owner I can offer you a solid opinion; The Panamera Turbo is a great car. Find a used Pan Turbo and keep your 997tt Cab.

I'm tired of this thread - get the X6M and post the same question on the BMW forum - you'll feel better with the answers.
