Brakes on GTS

Gents...curious as to thoughts on the following. While I know every driver is different, on average, how long would you all think brakes should last on this car before new pads are needed? 30K 20K? Also, only at 10K now, and the car seems to be totally fine. if the pads were getting low, does the car have the "break sensor" like most BMW's do, that would give a dashboard indication that the pads are getting thin?

Thanks

Of course, this TOTALLY depends on how hard you are on the brakes during your miles in the car. I tend to be very easy on the brakes - my crappy BMW brakes lasted over 50,000 miles on my M5. I would anticipate looking at my GTS brakes with almost 40,000 miles that I should easily go 60-80K miles. On the other hand, if you really get a kick out of setting off the ABS, or if you track your car at all, you could wear through a set of pads much more quickly.

You will get a warning on the cluster when the pads are low.

The warning comes on when the pads are how low, 10%, 20%? I know with ceramics, if you wear the pads too low and need rotors, those are like four grand. I read elsewhere to replace the pads with 30% left on them not to have to change the rotors.

Cole328

I have 38k on my 12 PTT and the pads are about toast. Sensor has not come on but had it in for service at 36k and they said I would need pads within 5k - so at 40k service I will probably replace.

No track time, but I do use the brakes, but for street driving seems like 30k - 40k is normal. I have steel brakes - not PCCB

Thanks Super....makes complete sense I also had the tech inspect them Monday when I was getting my tires put on, and he said I had around 60% left so, with 10K miles on car, i'm tracking around your usage

i tend to downshift to save my brakes, but I image I will replace my brake pads ( & rotor?) around 30-40K. The dealer told me, they replace the rotors AND the pads...and not just the pads.

I don't know if its better to replace the pads a little early, so I don't have to mess with replacing the rotor.

Usually pads and rotors are done at the same time but as you noted, if you replace pads a little early, you may save your rotors. At $1200 for fronts, that sounds like a good idea.
