New Panamera GTS Owner! Love the car, but having an issue...I think! Need some help

So I picked up my new (to me) 2013 Panamera GTS last night. It's a fantastic car and I feel very fortunate to own such an amazing vehicle!

When I drove it home last night and parked it in my driveway, I noticed that after the ignition was shut off that the car was making some intermittent "clanking" noises. The sounds were similar to small pieces of metal hitting one another, also similar to someone rustling a chain. The sound wound "ping" for a split second, every 20-30 seconds. Slowly fading away and becoming less frequent after about 10 mins.

The sounds seem to be coming from the suspension. I had the car in Sport Plus mode when the ignition was turned off, so the air suspension was in its lowest setting. The same thing happened this morning when I drove the car to work…..as the car “settled” into the lowest suspension setting, it started clanking as I locked the doors and walked away.

Does anybody know what sound this may be? It definitely does not sound normal. I’ve had other cars with air suspensions, including a 2009 Cayenne GTS, and it never made this noise! Could it be the standard suspension links making this noise? Seems very odd.

I will take it to the dealership for service if nobody has come across this same problem. My car has 17,500 miles and it was serviced routinely at Champion Motorcars in Florida throughout the previous owner’s history. Nothing in the service records indicate a problem with this noise. The car seems to drive fine, and the air suspension operates normally, raising and lowering the car without problems.

If anyone has any advice, please let me know!

Thanks so much. It’s great to be a part of the Panny Family!!!

Attached is one bad pic that I took last night. Better pics to come after a full detail tomorrow!

Give it a few days and see if it is a repeatable issue. If so and it bothers you take it to the dealer. That's why the car has a warrenty. Problem is will it duplicate the exact noise when you arrive. These issues can always be tough to diagnose. GL

Thanks and Absolutely. I can always take it to the dealership to get it checked out. I was just curious if anyone else on the forum experienced the same problem.

You think it might have something to do with how the car was strapped to the car carrier during the recent transport? Car was transported from Florida to CT this week.

Use Iphone to video and hopefully capture the noises if its loud enough so that you can show it to the dealership.

Congratulations! My turbo with 21,000 miles does it when car is off and cooling down. Just figured I beat its *** so it was crying in the end. Haha. Actually, just thought it was normal..... Now I'm curious. Note I have not had any issues hence my reasoning?..however flawed it may be.

Congratulations! That is one gorgeous PGTS! As for the sounds you're hearing, my guess is that it is associated with the manifold cooling down.

Could it be the front brakes cooling down?

M3's are notorious for that pinging noise as the brakes cool down when it is hot. I don't think I have ever heard it from the Panamera though.

Agree, a lot of cars make pinging noises from the brake components when you park after you've brought the system up to upper operating temps and not done a cool down "lap."

My car does the same thing too. It's normal when the brakes or any metal parts such as the exhaust are cooling down.

Thanks guys for your input.

This evening I was able to capture the noise on video. The sound was coming primarily from the front wheel areas of the car. Sounds like it's coming from the brakes.

The loud "clanks" in the video is the problem. The more quiet "ticking" noise is the standard noise that comes from a hot exhaust manifold.

I've never heard this noise coming from the brakes on any of my cars, including my M5 or my previous Cayenne GTS. I also did not drive the car particularly hard before filming this video clip.

Any new thoughts on what this could be???

Here's the video:

Thanks guys!

Tonyep, please watch my video and let me know if your car makes the same sounds.

To me this is not normal and the sounds are quite loud!

Thanks!

Oh man, you didn't know that those are Pnomes? They are cleaning the brakes after the car is standing. It's in the P manual in P265.

Relax is completely normal, ALL my cars, new and old do this after I drive them regular or pedal to the medal mode, it's the brakes for sure.

Enjoy your car AND please do not take it to the dealer for that, they will put a Cuckoos Nest sign under your name.

Okay MIA, I take your word for it that it's completely normal, I've just never experienced ANYTHING close to this noise with any of my other cars. I guess I could understand it making these noises, which are quite loud, if I just did a couple of laps on the track or if I was being a tad bit irresponsible on the roads, but driving slowly averaging 40mph on my commute to work??? Call me crazy or neurotic, but it still seems very odd to me!
