Insurance companies don't care about maintenance costs, since they don't pay for them. They pay for accidents and theft.

There are three main parts of an insurance premium: liability, collision, and comprehensive. Liability depends how likely they think you are to be in an accident, and that varies based on age, driving record, and car. Car because statistically, Panamera drivers are less likely to be speed-obsessed lunatics. Speed-enjoying, sure, but probably in their 40's with kids and responsibilities.

Collision depends on accident percentages and value, comprehensive based on theft chances and value.

So, there are reasons the insurance costs aren't so bad. We're paying $1056 / year for the Panamera, and $1019 / year for the Cayman. Liability's a bit higher on the Cayman, Collision and Comprehensive less.

2014 GTS, $1720/year with max coverage, $500 deduct. That's a 45 year old male with perfect record (never a ticket in my life!) and all other discounts for multiple car and home. What was shocking was that when I added my 16 year old daughter to the policy when she got my 2005 Range Rover she was only $650 a year. I was more than that on the RR! Hmmm.
