Aftermarket rims

Hey all,

When you get aftermarket rims, what do you have to be aware of to make sure handling etc. aren't impaired, or that nothing else is made worse?

Just trying to make sure I don't get something that looks good and presents other issues. Already learned that chrome rims can be tough to keep looking nice since replating chrome is hard to impossible and even that doesn't look like new.

Any other thoughts? Or nice rims you might point me towards?

Finally, what's a fair price to pay to have rims installed? (And existing rims removed, tires put onto new rims)

Thanks!

Just make sure the quality of Aftermarket wheels you get are on par or exceed that of your OEM.

Thanks for the reply. How would you judge this? Any brands or price floors or attributes I might look for?

I guess if your OEM wheels were Forged quality, I personally wouldn't buy lower in quality or strength type wheels like cast which can be also heavier. But that's just my .02 as I'm not a wheel expert just what I've read before.

I'm none too clear on how you judge rim quality either, but I think you only really need to go forged if you're tracking the car, and putting a lot more stress on the wheels than normal.

I've read the Tire Rack's "Sport Edition" rims are pliable and easily damaged. I encountered that because at one point I was thinking about getting some as winter rims. I ended up getting some Porsche OEM wheels as take-offs.

As for mounting price, I've been using my local NTB. They've charged $50 per mount / dismount for 4 wheels ($12.50 per wheel). I.e. $50 to put new tires on existing rims, $100 to remove summer tires and then put winter tires on the same rims. I imagine remove tires -> put tires on new rims would be the same price.

+1

You also don't want to hit pot holes and have to replace a wheel every time that happens. Good quality wheels are expensive, but worth it. On and off the track.

In my opinion it depends on what you are looking for. Chrome wheels are almost always heavier than non chrome wheels. I have a thing about driving cars with what feel like boulders at the corners so if I pull wheels off I tend to look for lighter weight. on the 650 coupe I bought I am pulling the 20" Msport wheels (already pulled the runflats) and going with lightweight 19"s and S-04 Pole Position tires. Everyone here has their own reason to change their wheels I still have the HRE wheels in my warehouse that I bought for the Panamera. Still cannot decide what to do with them.
